We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I just wanted to create a dope fitness space with a great atmosphere and gym culture! A place where people can come for REAL results and a sense of community. There’s a ton of fitness facilities in Georgia, no doubt about it. But there aren’t many who take pride in building culture amongst their tribe. I want Double Up Boxing and Fitness to be the premier transformational facility in Gainesville. And I intend on setting the tone for that.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Double Up Boxing and Fitness is a results driven facility with an all-inclusive approach to health and fitness. We’ve created THE premier fitness destination by merging both the complexity of strength training, along with the sweet science of boxing and conditioning. Our goal is to make sure you perform better not just in fitness, but in all aspects of your life. We want our members to become a walking representation of our core values and beliefs. This is what cultivates the mindset of a champion.
Being in fitness industry for over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some amazing people. This is by far the most rewarding part of the business! Watching clients breakthrough plateaus and transform their bodies in ways they could only dream of. Watching someone’s face light up after you’ve told them we just hit your personal goal! Personally, I just love it when people take action and get out of their own way.
One lesson I’ve learned along the years is that you have to meet people where they are. As a younger trainer, I’ve definitely been guilty of projecting personal expectations onto my clients. And that’s a huge no-no! Training consistently is already hard enough when you have outside obligations and responsibilities. The last thing a client needs is for you to place unrealistic expectations and goals onto them. We MUST learn to celebrate the small victories instead of just focusing on their end goal. If I can get you to train three times a week instead of two, then that’s a win! If you can cut alcohol consumption from 4-6 times a week to 2-3, that’s a win! Big things come from small beginnings.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, i’m new to Atlanta so you don’t want my opinions on this! Lol. But if I had to guess based on the places I’ve visited thus far, I would suggest they stay in the Perimeter Area. Downtown is way too busy and congested for my taste – even as a native New Yorker. This would give them an opportunity to venture Downtown to all the hotspots and still be able to escape that busy stop and go traffic. Midtown is really dope and I like the vibe around Ponce City Market. There’s a ton of restaurants to choose from and I can’t just put my finger on one! I’d also take them up to Alpharetta to checkout the Avalon and Halcyon area’s. Atlanta and it’s surrounding cities have so much to offer. I couldn’t be happier for making the decision to move here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely. My Wife! She’s my inspiration for all of this. My #1 cheerleader and biggest supporter. Without her, I wouldn’t be conducting this interview right now. In moments where I can’t even see the light at the end of the tunnel, she’s always there to help illuminate the path. All the things that a man could need to become the best version of himself – she provides and plus more. She’s truly an amazing woman!
