We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Candice/Oshunfunke Cooper-Lovett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Candice/Oshunfunke, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business helps people to get in touch with themselves and truly experience the power of pleasure and transformation. It also provides the opportunity for people to choose to realign and heal themselves to become who they were always meant to be. I’m a marriage and family therapist and sex therapist as well as a Tantric Shaman, Heartwork Practitioner, Oracle, and Herbalist. I wear many hats and they join well together. As a therapist, I have my business A New Creation Psychotherapy Services, which focuses on holistic care and wellness that incorporates mind, body, and spirit. Many people benefit from this modality because it focuses on all facets of life. It allows the person to tap into themselves and process outside of the box without judgment. It allows them to have their own healing process in addition to the incorporation of energy healing work. It also helps people come into their own as it relates to their spirituality and their relationship to source.
I assist clients in looking outside of themselves. The self they came into this earth with and the self that will leave when they transition; the awareness. My business assists in helping people see beyond their mind to see themselves as something vast, something whole, something that is a part of the universe to allow them to see how big they are in comparison to the problems, issues, or suffering that they may face. To watch their mind and life as a movie with an objective view so that they can better navigate situations and circumstances that may be difficult. I often tell my clients the goal is to be the lighthouse in a storm. To be at full peace and stillness within self regardless of what is occurring outside of themselves. I also teach the importance of finding their peace in order for things to come into place as it needs to for their lives, instead of searching for peace outside of themselves hoping that things can come into place as a result. The world has to know that we are so much more than we give ourselves credit for and the day we recognize that we are a part of a greater system and universe beyond our imagination thats the day we can truly be free and at peace.
What should our readers know about your business?
By certification, I’m a marriage and family therapist and sex therapist who holds transpersonal psychology and post-traumatic growth perspective. I’ve been in the field for almost 20 years. I am owner of A New Creation Psychotherapy Services and have been in business for almost 10 years. I am also a mental health speaker, consultant, and supervisor with my other business Drcooplove. By nature I am a spiritual healer, and oracle, something that I had not realized until a couple of years ago. I was told that I was not being my true self, that I was missing that spiritual component of my healing work. Within the last couple of years, I have fully embarked on my own personal spiritual journey and, learning more about my spiritual calling.
Since I was a child I’ve had a relationship with spirit. It would come to me by way of whispers, footsteps, shadows, or strong intuitive feelings that something was there that I didn’t see at the moment. In the past, I rarely shared this with anyone as I did not want people to assume things about me as well as my own shame. My ability to hear and see was something that I ran from for a long time and did not want to embrace because of my own fear, perceived trauma of such events, and a lack of understanding. Some years ago I began to look at spirituality and religion with a different lens that shifted my thinking of how I understood the spiritual realm and my relationship with God. I had my first spiritual divination back in 2018, I never had an experience of seeking guidance from someone who could communicate with my ancestors to give me messages. During this divination, one of the things she mentioned was that I needed to look into sex practices as it related to Asian/African sexuality as well as Tantric Sex. At that time, I had heard of Tantra, but I didn’t know much about it.
A couple of years later, I had another divination done by a priestess where I was told that I was not being my true self and I should be wearing head wraps and dresses, I was taken aback because I assumed that I was operating in my true self. I was told that I was missing the spiritual component and not operating in my spiritual gifts. I was unsure of what that was until I got a reading done about a month later. She told me, as the priestess told me during my divination that I was not operating in my true self…..the same message again. She asked me if I was going back to school, as a PhD holder I attest that was not something I was trying to do. Then she asked me what I did for a living I told her that I was a marriage and family therapist and sex therapist. Once she heard that about what I did, a light bulb went off for her. She shared that I was meant to be a sensual goddess, and advised me to research being a tantric healer. That was the sign for me that I was meant to do tantric work. I reached out to someone who studied under with Grand Trine Int. My first conversation with the grand master was very warm and welcoming as I had no idea about him or his organization at the time. I also chose to learn about the heart work integration system with another master at Heart Associations. In this work we learn how to access our heart/soul to truly express our divinity. We utilize sacred geometry to uplift our bloodline’s past, present, and future.
Additionally, as a woman who has uterine fibroid tumors, it was important for me to create a healing space for women who struggled with fibroids and other reproductive issues. As women, especially Black women we have a lot of womb trauma that has been experienced directly and/or intergenerationally and carry a lot in their hearts and wombspaces. It is my passion to aid in the healing of women and their womb spaces, as well as helping them to learn about and embrace their own sexuality and sensuality unapologetically. Secondly, there are men that are suffering in silence and often times struggle with being in touch with their own emotions and allowing themselves to fully heal. Patriarchy, colonialism, religion, and the influence of dominant discourse has a lot to do with this. In a therapeutic sense, watching men become vulnerable is a very powerful thing, watching them heal in a spiritual context is indescribable. I also have the passion in helping couples to connect on not just a sexual level but also spiritual. To me that is the deepest form of connection.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area I would take them to different places as I am eclectic myself, I like different types of things especially in the Atlanta area. For starters we would find a nice Mexican spot to hang out at and have good food and a margarita. We would also go to listen to some live music whether a jazz band or a show where someone is singing different songs by different artists. Something chill and laid back which would have dim lighting with good music and wine. I also enjoy spending time in nature such as going to a park with running water which there are a couple here in Atlanta as well as Georgia. We would also book a wine tasting tour to travel in N. Georgia to enjoy wine and just go for the ride to enjoy the scenery while tasting good wine. I enjoy those types of things as well. We would also go to a fun R&B concert maybe hip-hop depending on the mood of the day or the time to enjoy ourselves. As I shared earlier I’m a fan of live music which also includes concerts. We would also go to a nice day party but more of a lounge where its grown and sexy an older crowd where there is a chill vibe with nice music playing either live or on speaker where we can connect and enjoy the company of others for a little while. One of those nights we would stay at the Porsche hotel and stay on the rooftop until late in the night to enjoy watching the airplanes take off while enjoying good conversation as well. I am a pretty laid back person and don’t like to party as much as I did when I was younger so a lot of things that we would do would be chill and laid back experience. We also would attend some form of festival in the community to enjoy the crowd and to also enjoy good food and good music for the spaces that provide such things. I love to explore the town and have a good time but also to relax and unwind.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first person I would like to shoutout is my mom. Lately it has been a difficult time in my family due to having multiple significant losses within a short time frame. I thank my mom for her resilience and strength which she taught me just by watching her. I also admire her heart and how she loved us and how she sacrificed for us, she would give us the shirt off her back to ensure she was okay and as a mother I continue to strive to be the mom she was for us for my son. My son, who is another inspiration for me is why I do all that I do. He is the person that makes me proud everyday because I have him and he calls me mom, thats all I can ask for. I also thank my spouse for being a great co-parent and supporting my endeavors. I also want like to shoutout my grandmother who transitioned last month. She was like my second mom and taught me so much. She taught me the importance of going to school and keeping up good grades. It helped me to see and recognize how those things paid off as a result. She was my heart and gave me so much wisdom and I love her forever for it. My sisters for always being my biggest cheerleaders and supporters they cheer me on more than I cheer on myself, their love is apart of what continues to keep me going. They always have my back regardless if they agree or not and we are always there for one another. I will forever shout out my mentor from my doctoral program Dr. Watson who always always believed and had faith in me even when I didn’t see it for myself and taught me the importance of “knowing my stuff” that I’m the expert in my craft. Last but not least, I want to thank my healing partner, and sister for seeing me when I don’t see myself, and displaying true loyalty and unwavering love. I’m appreciative us coming together to do the amazing work that we do in this world and looking forward to doing much more!!!
