We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Bohac and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
While trying to transition away from 15 years in the pharmacy industry, I was looking for something that would allow me to be creative and more hands on. My husband and I have a 1970 VW bus, The Hunny Bus, that we’ve rented for a few events after staging it for photos at our wedding. While I love the idea of the bus getting more action, I wanted something I could do independently without having to rely on my husband to drive it. I saw a photo online of a DIY flower bar (just flowers in vases, a handwritten sign) and thought it was something I could provide as an experience, but really give special attention to it. I set up a trial run for friends and it was such a hit! Seeing everyone’s enjoyment while making bouquets together gave me the confidence that it was something I wanted to pursue. I found an antique tea cart on Facebook Marketplace which was the perfect, charming addition I had envisioned to elevate the Hunny Bloom flower bar. I decided to start an event rental business incorporating both the bus, and the flower cart, and they actually have become such a fun and perfect marriage for some of my flower pop-ups!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hasty Hive Events provides rental experiences for any sort of special occasion- baby or bridal showers, weddings, garden parties, birthdays, etc., and it is comprised of The Hunny Bus for photo ops, and Hunny Bloom flower bar. Hasty is my husband’s last name, but it has a much better ring to it. I’ve also been doing flower bar pop-ups at local businesses which has been a fun experience!
As a pretty fearful person, (afraid of bugs, snakes, the unknown, failure…) I’m extremely proud of myself for starting this venture. Though there are new challenges, responsibilities and some tears involved with starting a business, I have gained such a great feeling of joy and fulfillment. I have also learned so many new skills! Again, so much of getting to this point has piggybacked off the support of friends and family.
I think what sets my business apart is my attention to detail. I strive to give clients the best experience I can, and am constantly thinking of ways I can improve or upgrade that experience, whether it’s for a private event or a pop-up.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live super close to Marietta Square, so of course checking that out is a must. I like to pop by Sweet Melissa Records for tunes and antiques, and grab a slice at Marietta Pizza Co. for a casual lunch. The farmers and artisan markets on Saturdays are always lively with something for everyone. There are also great photo spots in front of murals, in Glover Park, and in the alleyways of historic brick buildings. For nightlife, whether you prefer a dive, family friendly brewery, or cocktail bar- it really has everything! Kennesaw Mountain is nearby, and there are lots of surrounding trails to choose from; Noses Creek Loop is my go-to for an easy hike.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been the biggest catalyst for starting my own business. He saw how unhappy I was working full-time in a cubicle, and reminded me that life is too short to not do something you love. My parents and friends have also been such big supporters and helpers, and have kept me encouraged continuously throughout this journey. There are so many things that can be discouraging as a business owner, but knowing I have so many people in my corner really drives me to keep pushing towards success.
