We had the good fortune of connecting with Lina Ghoneim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I think the moment I became a mom was when my priorities shifted completely. I wanted my kids to always come first, and I couldn’t bare the thought of leaving them in someone else’s care at such an early age so that I can go to work. I highly respect the moms who are able to do that, but I realized that a 9-5 career was just not right for me anymore. So that’s when I started thinking of starting my own business. Something that would give me the complete freedom to go at my own pace, my own working hours, to be my own boss, and earn an income from the comfort of my home taking care of my children. It took me a while to decide what exactly this business was going to be. I knew that I have a passion for photography and for cooking, I have a bachelor’s degree and some experience in Marketing/Media, and I was becoming quite the parenting expert too after getting my masters degree in early childhood education. I started sharing little bits of my motherhood journey on social media, mom-tips and hacks, my favorite recipes, worked on my photography and videography skills, and before I knew it I started gaining an audience, parents from all over the world were asking for my advice, and brands started reaching out to me to promote their products/services with them. That’s when I knew that content creation was the business I was looking for.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The world of social media often relies on trends which can make a lot of creators seem repetitive, so I’m always trying to avoid that and focus on just being myself. I try to share both the good and the challenging moments of my life, to show my audience that being a perfect parent just doesn’t exist, no matter what they might see online. My pictures and videos are usually very colorful and bright, which might not match certain people’s “aesthetic” but I think that’s what sets me apart. I honestly don’t care much for trends or aesthetics, but care more about being real and raw. Before I share a post I always ask myself “what value am I bringing to my audience?” Whether it’s educational (recipes, parenting tips, helpful products/services, life hacks) or entertaining (funny or sad relatable moments of motherhood) I want the center of my business to always be about helping others. I remember how excited I was when I received that first paycheck from a brand sponsorship, but honestly it doesn’t come close to how happy and proud I felt the first time a parent DMed me saying how thankful she was for all the tips I shared because they helped her become the kind of mom she dreamed to be. I’ve since received so many similar messages like this from parents all over the world, and it’s these moments that truly keep me going no matter how challenging it gets.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friends are now moms like myself so to be honest it doesn’t really get very exciting when they come visit me because our kids always lead the way, haha. I will definitely know the best parks we can go to, the best indoor playgrounds incase it rains, and all the kid-friendly restaurants that we’d feel comfortable making a lot of noise in. Some people might say that sounds extremely boring but I really wouldn’t have it any other way. I know that right now is not the time for me to go on extravagant dates with my husband, or a girls trip away with my friends. or travel to Europe (unless we’re going to Disney). I’ll have lots of time for all that when my kids are older.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been my number 1 fan and support system throughout my motherhood and content creation journey. Putting myself out there on social media definitely has its challenges and some days I honestly wanted to quit, but he always cheered me on and somehow knew that this was my calling. He does a lot of the annoying work behind the scenes too, like filing my taxes, organizing my finances, creating my website (coming soon!) and so much more. I also have to mention what a wonderful dad he is – I always say that we make a great team!
