We had the good fortune of connecting with Addie Bartlett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Addie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Tenacity. When I was growing up, my brother and I would take tennis lessons when we were on vacation in Hilton Head for a few weeks each summer. One summer, when I was about 9 years old, my dad drove us over for the evening “match play” event, which was the capstone of the week of lessons. When we got there, the coach pulled my dad to the side and said my brother could play, but I wasn’t good enough. I was hurt and disappointed and determined to do something about it. That kicked off years of tennis clinics, private lessons and hard work that transformed my tennis game. While someone telling me I can’t do something is certainly motivating, when I started in residential real estate I had many years of professional experience under my belt and I was determined to grow quickly. I see every obstacle in a deal, or challenge of a new milestone for my business, as an opportunity to work really hard and see results.

What should our readers know about your business?
If you ask 10 realtors what they did before selling real estate, you would hear 10 different stories. In one of my early courses in college, we discussed the theory in psychology that we are the sum of all of our experiences, and this is something that has always stayed with me. I believe my professional experience prior to becoming a real estate agent has contributed to the success that I’ve had in this industry. I started my career in commercial real estate then attended business school at Emory University to make the most of a few years when real estate was really slow. After obtaining my MBA and a few more years in commercial real estate, I had the versatility to spend a number of years in a completely different industry. I worked at Google and then a start-up partner of Google’s called Cloud Sherpas, selling SaaS applications, training and other services to businesses operating or moving to the cloud. When Accenture bought Cloud Sherpas, I had been missing real estate and left tech to take a role in Workplace Strategy Consulting back in commercial real estate. When Compass was in high growth mode and planning to open an office in Atlanta, I was hired, with a background in both real estate and tech, to spearhead the growth of the business here. I worked for Compass for 16 months before I decided to move over to being an agent and start my own business selling real estate under the umbrella of Compass. My background in commercial real estate and technology in sales, marketing and consulting roles gave me a fantastic starting point for not only building a business, but I started with a really wonderful network of people I’d worked with and known over the years. The combination of my work experience and that network has helped me go from zero to $30 million in my first four years in the business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a taste of my life in Atlanta, I’d take a visitor to check out Ashford Lane on a Friday afternoon for drinks, dinner and ice cream. My husband and I like to take our kids there to to wind down from a long week, but it’s also a place they can run around and we have the opportunity to socialize with friends.

To mix things up, we would take a day-trip to Serenbe. I always say when I drive into Serenbe I feel my stress level drop. There are such cute restaurants for lunch and wine tasting at the General Store. I love to check out the homes there and the ongoing development of the town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have always been supportive of my goals and pursuits. My dad started a business the year I was born, and I know I inherited my entrepreneurial spirit from him. I also could not have built my business to where it is today without the support of my amazing husband. He celebrates my wins and cheers me on during hard negotiations. He is the most wonderful father to our two children and takes on a lot when I’m working. Finally, I have a great group of women I went to business school with who are all busy working moms and wives. Each holds a seat on my unofficial Board of Directors.
