We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Murtagh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leah, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Duluth, MN. Both of my parents were/are entrepreneurs, so, I grew up around risk and leadership—those elements felt familiar to me, even if uncomfortable at times. Money was often tight in my home, and I could see and feel the financial stress when my parents were in the thick of it. But, we always somehow had enough to eat and a good home—my friends all thought I was wealthy when in reality the story was much more tenuous than anyone who knew me imagined.

I learned salesmanship and sportsmanship from my father, and public speaking and facilitation from my mom. I combined all those skills into my first career as a fitness class teacher and personal trainer, and later that background helped me open up my own yoga studio.

Now, I use the writing skills I developed in school and my continued organizational, sales, and leadership skills to promote and run my marketing agency. (Effortless Excellence Content.) I target my services mainly to the industries I know so well already: movement, wellness, and and other related service businesses.

I first began teaching fitness classes to a local school teacher community as a high-school student. My dad helped me price out my offerings and also helped me purchase the equipment I needed. A couple times per week, I got up in front of a room full of adults and taught them how to move their bodies, get stronger, and feel healthy and energized. Once I felt the “high” of leadership and making money in this way, I was totally hooked!

After that, I kept choosing roles in companies that allowed me a lot of free reign with my entrepreneurial tendencies. I led fitness teacher teams and personal training teams. I launched new and profitable programming in whatever gym I landed in. I learned to see where the community need was and fill it with the right solutions.

It’s always been my journey to help others in unique ways that enrich my clients as well as myself—I don’t plan on stopping any time soon!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My current business found me. I had sold my yoga studio in 2019 and was drifting along trying to build a business coaching business, but not gaining much momentum. Still very much in the experimental phase at that moment. To bring in some extra cash, I had signed on with a very small local digital marketing agency to write blog posts for their clients.

After several months of writing up articles on pest control, cleaning services, precision agriculture, and machining, I gained ONE private copywriting client in the yoga/pilates industry. Through the next year, she taught me how to write structured, effective drafts that magnetized clients to her studio from emails and social media.

Once I learned the structure of that specialized content, I could replicate it all day long—effectively, authentically, and with so much JOY. Because it’s writing about something I LOVE—making bodies move better and feel healthier and vibrant. It was more play than work to promote this studio owner.

Pretty soon, my first client recommended my services to several other of her studio owner-colleagues, and Effortless Excellence Content became a “thing.”

My brand of writing works because it’s natural. I’ve specialized in the industries I know a TON about, so the content strategy and implementation are effortless for me (hence the name of my company—effortless for me AND for my clients.) Plus, I develop these deep and meaningful relationships with my clients—they TRUST me and I LOVE them. Which makes me want to deliver my absolute best for them—when THEY succeed in growing their reach and impact, I know I”VE succeeded in doing my job well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live adjacent to Minneapolis, MN. Unless you love to ski and snowshoe (which I DO,), I’d first recommend that you drop by in late May (to catch the sweet-smelling lilac trees blooming), or early June (when all the local flowers pop out and the color is delightfully intense after a long, hard winter.)

We would start the day with a walk in the beautiful Eloise Butler nature area, which is nestled withing Theo Wirth Park. A quick stop at the Trailhead and Mill Valley Market would yield us a delicious cup of something hot + a delicious mid-morning snack.

Lunch at Nong’s Thai in New Hope, MN, and then a relaxed chat at the gazebo in Westwood Hills Nature center while we watch birds and enjoy the luscious greening woods around us would round out our afternoon.

In the evening, I’d drag you to one of my favorite dance venues (Like Studio Duende in St. Louis Park, or the Triune Masonic Temple in St. Paul) for a West Coast Swing lesson and an unforgettable evening of social dance.

The art, music, and dance communities here are very hard to beat—that’s where and how I spend most of my free time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Let’s dedicate this shout-out to Elizabeth Marberry, Fearless Marketing Mentor, my close colleague who is amazing front-woman, crowd-worker, bright and shiny ball of light, and the generator of many of my referrals!
