We had the good fortune of connecting with Curtis Austin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Curtis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was,” Thinking 10 years from now where do I want to be and by working for someone else would it get me there or provide me the lifestyle I envision?Upon self reflection I actually experienced a brief moment of fear! Fear that my life and future was currently in the hands of someone whose appreciation for me was only measured by how much value I brought daily, and at any given moment that could change. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with having a job. I actually respect everyone that wakes up and earn their living! However, everything is not for everybody,,we all have to move according to what we believe is the best way as an individual. For me, what that looked like was, betting on myself. Stepping out of my comfort zone. There’s this quote that reads, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”, it something that actually played in my everyday over the course of a year once I internalized the meaning. Yes life is hard as it should be, there’s nothing I can think of with a high perceived value, that was not put the pressure, and or friction during its development. When there is purpose the struggle is actually a rewarding pain, and strangely can become addictive!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the CEO of FutureFlowFitness. About a year ago I was hit by a Lyft driver, and placed on disability. I was working for FedEx ground at the time. Prior to being placed on disability I tried to work through the pain to fulfill my financial obligations. Additionally, I knew how important I was to the company and for me to leave would things hard for them. This was the holiday time of the year. After the holidays I just could not mange anymore without the constant thought of long term injury. When I went to my employer at the time and requested a drivers helper, due to the amount I was being paid they did not want to accommodate me. So I was forced to go on disability. I had not ever been in a situation like this where I could potentially fall behind on my obligations should this situation become a long process. Going to the chiropractor was a temporary relief, but didn’t fix the problems. At this point I knew it was all on me. Sink or swim, there was nobody coming to save me. So I dedicated everyday for 5months learning about the human body and its functions. Subsequently, I went online and got my personal training and corrective exercise certification. I then used everything that I learned to progressively heal my injury, and strengthen my body. Upon returning to work I felt out of place like, I worked this hard to be here now I feel like I should be doing better. When reflecting on these mix emotions I realized everything I had gone through emotionally, mentally, and physically. One thought that came to me overtime is I love helping people., and I know that there is someone else out there that can use my skillset and experience! Initially, I tried to manage building my company while working, but it seemed as if my employer became more unappreciative by the day. For 6 months being back I tried to push through it, but was making very little progress in my dream while building theirs. One day I just decided that I rather bet on myself then be undervalued, so I brought the company vehicle back and told myself. I wouldn’t ever be in this situation again. Business is not easy, and building from the ground up definitely comes with many unexpected challenges. However when your “why is powerful enough” none of that matters. I learned if you don’t define yourself for yourself you become what others want you to be! My brand FutureFlowFitness goes beyond the workout it’s also about help clients face the inner battles and uncertainties that help shape us into the best versions we were designed to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am very spontaneous so when my friends come to visit it really depends on who they are that determines the destination.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Gratitude is what makes a good person great! There are many people and books I can say have had a great impact on me, so I would like to thank everyone I have had the opportunity to extract lessons and blessings from you all count! Whether you hate me or love me it’s always something I learn Lol! However, if I could shout out those that have had a major contribution to my success. I would first and foremost give credit to the most high! The beginning and ending to all things. Next I would like to shot my parents and my grandparents for giving me life! I’m not sure how to separate them! Also, to my sister Mary for her being a great factor in constantly reminding me that I’m only as great as my biggest disbelief! She doesn’t allow one conversation to end without reminding me, the importance of self value.
