We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph DeVito and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
To listen. The world will reveal everything to you if you let it. To not expect anything and be patient. Keep busy and always exercise that acting muscle. Feed your soul. Study. So many lessons that I’m grateful for. Hard to name just one.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I’m not sure what sets me apart. Frankly I feel so ordinary most of the time. I feel like all the people I see out in daily life have such interesting things going on. Proud of? Maybe not giving up yet? I do get excited about a new piece of material (a new script). I got where I am (not successful at all) basically by realizing this is who I am and although I don’t get paid to do it on a regular basis I stay positive. It wasn’t, is not easy. I want to quit every week these days. But it’s not what I do, again it’s who I am and I can’t quit. I’m an actor to the core no matter how I earn my living.

People should know that there is a group of talented hardworking actors out there doing what they love to entertain their audience. We are not names or known at all by the public yet, but again: We are doing what we love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Is this friend a fellow artist? We’re definitely talking shop then. Central Park is one of my favorite places. Museums are so enriching. I stare and lose myself in the painting and sculptures. I love to walk so a lot of that would be happening. People watching. Run around to a few of my favorite west village haunts. Metaphysical conversation flowing. I eat pretty healthy and specific and also love to cook so most of our meals would be at my place. With some cocktails and music playing in the background. First a trip to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think that every person who I’ve crossed paths with in my life has contributed. My late, great acting coach Alice Spivak was a huge part of shaping me into the actor I’ve become. A very close friend of mine Joe Perrino and his family had a tremendous impact of my life and how I live it now. They sort of re-raised me when we all met in my early twenties.
