We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Makupson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Industry outsiders may not be fully aware of the extensive effort involved in bringing forth a great product and establishing a global brand. Building a successful brand demands significant dedication and hard work. The intricate processes encompass formulation, manufacturing, retail, marketing, and strategy. The development of a successful brand entails a continuous commitment to evolution and adaptation to stay relevant in the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of the Beauty Industry. It’s a journey marked by persistence, involving numerous challenges and a willingness to reinvent oneself to meet the evolving demands of the market.
What should our readers know about your business?
My journey into holistic hair care was born out of a profound and personal experience. After suffering 2nd degree chemical burns on my face from an over-the-counter beauty product shortly after giving birth to my daughter, I delved into extensive research on beauty product ingredients. What I uncovered was alarming – many products marketed to Black women contained toxic elements linked to serious health concerns, including cancer and reproductive harm.
Frustrated by the prevalence of harmful ingredients, I utilized my training as an aesthetician and herbalist, decided to take matters into my own hands. I devoted myself to formulating a line of award-winning, non-toxic holistic hair care products.
My products are suitable for all hair textures, formulated with nutrient-rich, fair-trade, Ayurvedic ingredients to nourish the scalp and foster hair growth. I match crystals and gemstones in my products based on their energetic healing properties. This tradition, inspired by ancient Egyptians, transcends the realm of beauty, aiming to promote overall well-being.
We vow never to use: Parabens, sulfates, formaldehydes, phthalates, DEA, petrochemical, byproducts, artificial dyes and synthetic fragrance. Furthermore, we believe that switching to plant-based ingredients is ultimately more environmentally sustainable, better for human health, and produces superior beauty results.
At Meraki our commitment to both people and the environment, we actively support fair trade, champion organic farming, minimize our carbon footprint, and utilize recyclable packaging. These values are at the core of our business philosophy, reflecting a dedication to sustainable practices and eco-friendly choices. We believe that by incorporating these principles into our operations, we can contribute to a healthier planet and support ethical practices in the industries we engage with.
“Meraki, for me, was created around the idea of self-love, discovering my passion for life, and fearlessly pursuing the things that set your soul on fire.” In each product and every crystal, I weave a narrative of empowerment, self-care, and the pursuit of one’s truest passions.
I currently hold a position on the board for Better Black Beauty, a non-profit organization based in California. This organization focuses on advocacy and education regarding toxic beauty products. It’s a cause close to my heart, and through Better Black Beauty, I aim to contribute to positive change within the beauty industry.
In addition to my involvement with Better Black Beauty, I’ve established my own non-profit organization – the Clean Beauty Coalition. This serves as a think tank for BIPOC beauty industry leaders, united in the goal of reducing the exposure of toxic ingredients in personal care and beauty products. The coalition addresses the racial disparities these harmful chemicals inflict on black and brown women through education, advocacy, and policy reform. It’s a passion project that reflects my deep commitment to fostering a cleaner, safer beauty industry for all.
I am thrilled about the upcoming launch of my beauty and wellness brand, set to launch this spring “Self-love Daily.”

Furthermore, I extend recognition to the beauty community and industry experts who contribute to the continuous evolution of the sector. Beauty publications, books and podcast that have inspired and provided insights into entrepreneurship and the beauty business also deserve credit.
