We had the good fortune of connecting with LaTishia Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaTishia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first started tutoring in my college’s Math department, it was a blend of necessity and passion. I loved mathematics, but I initially hadn’t envisioned a career in education. My journey took an unexpected turn when a student, whom I was tutoring as part of a work-study program, approached me to continue tutoring privately. This was a pivotal moment that made me realize there was both a need and a space for my skills in the market.

While working for various big-box tutoring brands, I gained invaluable insights into the tutoring industry. This experience was eye-opening, showing me both the strengths and limitations of existing tutoring services. I saw an opportunity to provide something more personalized and effective, which led to the creation of my first tutoring company.

The decision to start my own business was driven by a desire to fill a gap in the educational landscape. I wanted to offer a more engaging, understanding, and adaptable approach to learning mathematics. My aim was not just to teach but to inspire a love for the subject in my students.

In planning my business, I conducted thorough research to understand the community’s educational needs, the competition, and potential challenges. This planning phase was crucial in shaping the vision and mission of my tutoring services.

Of course, this path was not without risks. Yet, my determination to make a positive impact in the education sector gave me the courage to move forward. The subsequent formation of Achieve Success Tutoring, in collaboration with Aquarius Cain, was a strategic decision to expand our reach and capabilities. This partnership allowed us to combine our strengths and offer a broader range of services to students in the Nashville and Atlanta areas, and beyond.

In essence, the thought process behind starting my own business was a blend of recognizing a market need, harnessing my passion for mathematics and teaching, and a strong desire to make a difference in the educational journeys of students. The fulfillment I get from seeing our students succeed reaffirms every day that this is the right path for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Achieve Success Tutoring, the culmination of my years in the educational field, stands apart for its personalized and engaging approach to learning. What sets us apart is our commitment to not just teaching subjects, but to nurturing a deeper understanding and love for learning in our students. We prioritize individual learning styles, adapting our methods to each student’s needs, which is something the larger, more standardized tutoring services often overlook.

I’m most proud of our ability to make a real difference in students’ lives. Hearing from parents about their child’s improved confidence in math, or seeing students actually enjoy the subject that they once dreaded, is incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, the expansion of our services to reach students globally through online platforms is something that excites me, as it signifies not just business growth, but an increase in our educational impact.

The journey to where we are today was by no means easy. The initial challenge was establishing a foothold in a market dominated by large tutoring companies. We had to build trust with parents and students, proving that our methods were effective and our approach was unique. Marketing our services, managing logistics, and adapting to the changing educational landscape, especially during the pandemic, were significant hurdles.

We overcame these challenges through persistence, adaptability, and a clear focus on our mission. Building a strong network, listening to our clients’ needs, and continuously improving our services based on feedback were crucial steps in our journey.

The biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way include the importance of adaptability, the power of a strong network, and the need for continuous learning and improvement, both as an educator and an entrepreneur.

I want the world to know that Achieve Success Tutoring is more than just a tutoring company. It’s a place where students not only learn but also discover their potential and develop a passion for learning. Our story is one of resilience, adaptation, and unwavering commitment to education. We believe that with the right support and approach, every student can achieve success, and we’re here to provide that support.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to do in the area but here are some places I would love to explore with my best friends in the area: The Flying Biscuit Café, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, Centennial Olympic Park, West Egg Café, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, Atlanta History Center, Paschal’s, Edgewood Avenue bar district, Highland Bakery, High Museum of Art, Atlanta Botanical Garden, The Vortex, Fox Theatre, Buttermilk Kitchen, Stone Mountain Park, The Optimist, Buckhead district, Krog Street Market, Atlanta BeltLine, Ponce City Market, Savannah or the North Georgia Mountains (for a day trip), Canoe, Piedmont Park, South City Kitchen.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In reflecting on my journey and the success of my tutoring business, I realize it has been shaped by the support and inspiration from several sources. First and foremost, I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, particularly my daughter Bella Noelle. Their unwavering support and belief in my vision have been my constant source of strength and motivation.

I also want to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of my business partner, Aquarius Cain. Our collaboration in forming the new and improved Achieve Success Tutoring has been a defining moment in my career, blending our strengths and visions to create a more impactful educational service.

Special recognition goes to the students and parents who have trusted us over the years. Their feedback, engagement, and success stories have not only driven the growth of our business but have also been a personal source of fulfillment and inspiration.

I would be remiss not to mention the broader community of educators and tutors, especially those in the BOTB (Black Owned Tutoring Business) group. The exchange of ideas, support, and collective wisdom in this group has been instrumental in refining our business strategies and educational approaches.

Lastly, in terms of books, there have been many that influenced my thinking and approach. However, one that stands out is ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’ by Carol S. Dweck. This book’s insights into growth mindset versus fixed mindset have been integral in shaping my tutoring philosophy and approach to education.

In essence, this shoutout is a tribute to everyone who’s been part of this journey – mentors, collaborators, family, students, and the wider educational community. Each one of them deserves credit and recognition for their contribution to my story.
