We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have never been a risk taker. I naturally fear the unknown because the Virgo in me needs to know everything! Throughout my entire life I’ve always played it safe, erring on the side of caution. The biggest risk I took was quitting my corporate job with benefits including a 401k to be my own boss. It was a little after the pandemic in December 2021 when management planned to move us all back into the office and right then I knew I couldn’t return back. I submitted my 2 weeks notice and entered 2022 as a full time entrepreneur. I approach risk with a calculated and logical perspective, evaluating potential outcomes before making decisions. Quitting my corporate job in 2021 to pursue photography full-time was a significant risk that shaped both my life and business. It was the beginning of my very exciting journey to becoming the entrepreneur I am today. While I do weigh the pros and cons, my unwavering self-belief and confidence in my capabilities serves as a driving force. This mindset empowers me to embrace challenges, take calculated risks, and continually propel my business forward. Taking that risk changed my life and it worked out in my favor.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is the experience I offer, creating a positive and comfortable environment in my studio that my clients love and enjoy. Customer service is at the forefront, ensuring my clients feel valued and heard is my number one priority. I take pride in the fact that I am a self taught photographer, I did not go to school for none of this. In fact, I received my BA in English General Studies so that I can teach high school students. But I started out shadowing other photographers I admired and taking their classes to learn as much as I can. I was also attending photography conferences to refine my skills and get a close up look on how some of the top earning photographers in the country were making a living off of their passion.
The road was challenging and continues to be. Facing challenges, I discovered the art of focusing only on what I can control and finding practical solutions to issues before they escalate. Self-care emerged as a vital lesson, reminding me to take time for reflection and recharge to maintain a resilient mindset. I workout 4-5 times a week including Yoga and Meditation practice. All of which keeps me thriving to the best of my ability; physically, mentally and emotionally.
One significant lesson I would say I’ve learned as a photographer is the importance of capturing the essence of a moment in-camera properly the first time, so you don’t have to do too much work editing in post (Must know lighting), and emphasizing the power of preparation and attention to detail. All of these things are extremely important if you want to be a successful photographer.
Additionally, I’ve learned to disregard negative comments and stay true to my vision, understanding that in the creative realm, authenticity often prevails over external opinions. Each lesson has not only improved my craft but has also reinforced my commitment to growth and continuous improvement in the dynamic world of photography. I will encourage people to post and share their art no matter how many likes or how much engagement received. Share it anyways! It’s mind over matter, if you don’t pay those opinions any mind, those opinions essentially will never matter. And remember you’ll never meet a hater that’s doing better than you! In sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to trust their journey and prioritize authenticity in their artistic endeavors.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s really so much to do in Chicago depending on the season, first I would take them to dive into the thrill of Jet Skiing at North Avenue Beach, where the city skyline provides a breathtaking backdrop. After working up an appetite, I would treat their taste buds to a culinary adventure in Hyde Park. Whether it’s the refined flavors of Chant, the soulful dishes at Virtue, or the vibrant Caribbean cuisine at 14 Parish, each dining experience guarantees your stomach will not be disappointed.
As the sun sets, I would take them to experience the vibrant Chicago nightlife. Head to The Wild Hare for an electrifying evening of live reggae music that resonates with the soul. If they’re craving a more eclectic nightlife scene, Tribe awaits with a nice little vibe. I would also invite them to hang out at Retreat at Currency Exchange, it’s a coffee shop during the day, but it’s also a nice chill vibe during the evenings or happy hour as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible individuals who played pivotal roles in the success of my photography business. First and foremost, immense thanks to my sister and CFO, Arlenea Miller, for being my unwavering support and believing in me when self-doubt lingered. Jasmine Walker, your generosity in allowing me to use your salon for photoshoots without charge was a game-changer. I can’t thank you enough girl! Jessell Hodge, your recommendation for a space at the Stewart Business Center paved the way for Chelle LaBelle Studios. I would not have my own studio if it wasn’t for you and I will never forget it. To my mother, your financial support and constant guidance have been invaluable. I have always admired your ability to come from nothing and obtain everything. You have shaped me into the woman I am today. Special thanks to mentors like Wolfe of Chicago, Darryl Hammond, and Tyree Williams for sharing their expertise in photography, from editing to posing, making my journey smoother. Each of you have left an indelible mark on my success, and I am profoundly grateful for your contributions to my flourishing business.
