We had the good fortune of connecting with Toni Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toni, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When contemplating risk, I view it as an inherent challenge, an opportunity to defy conventional limitations and assert my autonomy. The apprehension surrounding risks often impedes personal and professional growth. While I wouldn’t characterize myself as a rule breaker per se, I am inclined towards unconventional approaches, driven by the unique workings of my thought process. My trajectory deviates from the norm, requiring a level of determination beyond the ordinary to reach my objectives. This inclination towards nonconformity is evident in my approach, such as entering a room full of directors in full character prior to an audition.

In my endeavors, I’ve assumed diverse roles, ranging from a look-alike on set to proactively identifying casting directors and sending tailored letters directly to their residences. Risk, in my perspective, is synonymous with living a purposeful life; it serves as a litmus test for one’s capabilities, transcending binary outcomes of success or failure. The concept of rejection no longer signifies defeat but rather a temporal setback, allowing space for superior opportunities. I wouldn’t be a true Sagittarius if I didn’t take risk and have mini side quests.

As a creative catalyst grappling with ADHD, my modus operandi involves either multitasking with fervor or channeling intense focus into a singular task, yielding commendable results. Undertaking risks mandates not just motivation but disciplined efforts. Consistency and a structured routine are pivotal in fostering continual self-improvement, establishing a delicate equilibrium in the process. The art of risk-taking demands a discerning judgment of timing and a proficiency in interpersonal skills, where charisma and effective communication play pivotal roles.

Approaching the upcoming year, I define risk as an unwavering belief in oneself—whether it involves investing my last dollar in my craft or submitting applications for opportunities where my qualifications may be speculative. To me, the act of betting on oneself is an unequivocal endorsement of self-worth, rendering the associated risks not only worthwhile but essential for personal and professional evolution.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In delving into my artistic journey, what distinguishes me is the role of being a one-woman show. I possess the ability to singularly conceive, execute, and deliver an entire project—from writing and storyboarding to directing, filming, editing, and release. This autonomy has empowered me to undertake projects independently, akin to a modern-day equivalent of a Spike Lee, but in a female manifestation. I willingly delve into tasks that others may shy away from, infusing my work with a unique blend of a quirky sense of humor and distinctive style that can captivate audiences.

The path to my current professional standing has been far from facile. A defining aspect of my approach is a perpetual thirst for knowledge and learning. While this quality has facilitated my growth, it has also made me susceptible to absorbing unwanted projections and opinions from others. This journey has been intertwined with moments of self-doubt and self-consciousness. Over the years, as a serial people-pleaser, I found myself drained by constantly catering to the expectations of others, limiting my own success to meet their predetermined standards. It was a realization that compelled me to reclaim my identity, to cease being a background actor in my own story, and to prioritize my own aspirations.

The turning point involved shedding the facade and embracing my true self, unlearning detrimental habits, and living life authentically. My journey encompasses studying music, performing for esteemed figures, and opening for renowned artists like Kanye West. Despite being an art school dropout, I took an unconventional route, immersing myself in the fashion industry, working under a designer to enhance my skills and hands-on experience.

On set, even without lines, I left an indelible mark, forging connections with stylists, makeup artists, and fellow actors. I’ve earned nicknames on set, such as “Little Kerry Washington,” and had surreal experiences like dancing to Beyoncé with Tyler Perry and learning choreography from the legendary Debbie Allen. I am mentioned in someone’s memoir as a pivotal figure in the early stages of their career. My multifaceted roles as a big sister, mentor, and vessel of God underscore the depth and impact of my journey.

Importantly, I want the world to understand that my testimony is an ongoing narrative, intricately woven into my craft and brand. I am a unique force, with capabilities and contributions that set me apart. My story is far from complete, and there is an abundance of work yet to be done, fueled by an unwavering belief that my journey is a testament to the boundless possibilities that await. I’m unforgettable and people will always feel me before anything.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Crafting an ideal week-long experience for my best friend involves a perfect blend of outdoor adventures, cultural immersion, and shared creative pursuits. Picture us kicking off the week with a nature retreat, escaping to a waterfall outside the city for a serene hike and a leisurely picnic.

As the week unfolds, we’d delve into the local cultural scene, exploring museums and trying our hand at pottery to tap into our artistic sides. Playful activities like skating and dance classes would add a touch of spontaneity and laughter to our days.

Our culinary journey would be a delightful mix of lazy brunches, exploration of Mexican eateries (tacos, of course!), and a cozy night in, experimenting with new recipes together. As the week progresses, we’d engage in a creative exchange, sharing scripts, capturing impromptu memories through a photo shoot, and dedicating time to writing and idea generation.

Amidst our adventures, a visit to a bookstore or library would feed our bookish souls, leading to a tranquil afternoon of reading in a cozy café. We might even attend a literary event to celebrate the written word.

To round off the week, we’d take a reflective morning stroll, discussing the highs of our adventures. A spa day or yoga session would provide the perfect way to unwind before our final dinner, where we’d reminisce about the week’s highlights and eagerly plan for more adventures to come.

This tailored experience is not just about the activities but the shared moments, laughter, and personal growth that make it a truly unforgettable week. I’m all about the moments and making memories.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In acknowledging those instrumental in my journey, I extend my gratitude to a multifaceted support system that has shaped my success. Foremost, I dedicate my appreciation to the divine guidance of God, the bedrock upon which my faith stands resolute. The unwavering support of my village, comprised of individuals who have lent their efforts, mentorship, and encouragement, deserves profound recognition. My deepest thanks extend to my past versions, for enduring the pains, navigating the dark places, and contributing to my overall growth. I recognize the importance of every facet of my journey, and it is through acknowledging and appreciating the past versions of myself that I stand here today.

I am indebted to those who held my confidences with discretion, friends who provided both financial and emotional support, and the steadfast companions who saw me through moments of despair, panic attacks, and dark episodes. Their generosity, be it allowing me to borrow money, providing a place to stay, or simply speaking life into my endeavors, has been an invaluable contribution to my journey.

Equally deserving of acknowledgment are the various incarnations of myself—each version contributing to my growth, resilience, and the person I am today. In gratitude, I extend my thanks to those who weathered the storms with me, refusing to let go during challenging times.

Addressing the naysayers and those who may have wished ill upon my journey, I dismiss such negativity, choosing instead to channel the adversarial energy into my motivation. Drawing inspiration from the philosophy that even in the presence of critics, one is assured of making an impact, I echo the sentiment that adversaries are akin to front-row fans, providing an unanticipated source of encouragement.

Ultimately, my profound thanks extend to the divine orchestrator of my existence, the ancestors who paved the way, and the unwavering belief that I am here for a purpose. Armed with this conviction, I wake up each day, embracing the uniqueness of my contributions to the world, fully aware that my presence is indispensable in the grand tapestry of life.
