We had the good fortune of connecting with Medinah Eatman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Medinah, what matters most to you?
As a science educator with more than a decade of experience, who cherishes traveling with family and exploring diverse cultures, the principle that resonates most with me is “Lifelong Learning.” This principle is deeply intertwined with my passion for science, education, and cultural exploration.
Firstly, as a science enthusiast, I understand that science is ever-evolving. It requires an ongoing commitment to learning and adapting to new discoveries and theories. This aligns with my belief in the importance of staying intellectually curious and open to new ideas, a trait I strive to instill in my students.
Secondly, my specialization in special education has taught me the significance of adapting learning methods to meet diverse needs. Lifelong learning in this context goes beyond academic knowledge; it’s about understanding and embracing the different ways individuals learn and perceive the world. This perspective has been crucial in my work, particularly in developing “Science.Teacher.Mom LLC,” where I create hands-on science learning experiences that are inclusive and accessible to a broad range of learners.
Moreover, my love for travel and cultural immersion is a testament to my belief in lifelong learning. Each journey is an opportunity to learn about new cultures, languages, and perspectives, enriching my understanding of the world. This global awareness not only enhances my personal growth but also enriches my teaching, allowing me to bring diverse insights into my classroom and business.
Finally, the inception of “Science.Teacher.Mom LLC” during the COVID-19 pandemic was a direct response to a unique learning challenge. It exemplified the need for adaptability and innovation in education – hallmarks of a lifelong learner. Creating virtual labs and shipping science kits were ways to continue engaging learners when traditional methods were disrupted. This endeavor was not just about teaching science; it was about modeling resilience and the willingness to learn and adapt in the face of adversity.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Science.Teacher.Mom, established in 2020 amid school closures, was a visionary step towards enhancing science education. It addressed a critical need, helping educators and parents make science interactive and engaging through virtual labs and hands-on kits. The brand’s unique approach, focusing on high-quality STEM Kits, professional development for educators, and a diverse range of services, truly sets it apart. Additionally, being featured on “George to the Rescue” was a milestone, boosting recognition and driving the brand’s evolution.
Facing the challenges of entrepreneurship while juggling motherhood, the journey was far from easy. It involved navigating personal losses and a new baby, all while maintaining and growing the business. Learning to outsource was a key strategy in overcoming these challenges. At its core, Science.Teacher.Mom is committed to fostering inclusivity in STEM, especially for black and brown students, aiming to reflect diversity in science and education.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For an unforgettable week in Bergen County and NYC, I suggest immersing yourself in a diverse mix of natural beauty, cultural experiences, historical exploration, and a culinary journey complete with delightful mocktails.
When it comes to dining, start your mornings at Willow & Whisk, known for its delectable brunch offerings. For a taste of Cuban cuisine, Cuban Petes in Montclair is a must-visit. Don’t miss the chance to savor exquisite mocktails and pastries at Casa del Flor, a place that’s as much about the drinks as it is about the desserts.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Flat Rock Brook offers serene hiking trails perfect for a leisurely day in nature. For a more urban experience, Central Park in NYC is the quintessential spot for that classic New York vibe. And for stunning views of NYC with the charm of Hoboken, the Hoboken Waterfront is an ideal spot for picturesque moments.
During your stay, be sure to delve into the area’s diverse culinary scene, explore the various shopping malls, and experience the thrill of indoor amusement parks and dabble with the broadway plays. This blend of activities and sites will surely provide a well-rounded and memorable visit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It is with heart brimming gratitude that I dedicate it to my village – the collective embodiment of support, love, and wisdom that has raised not just a child, but also a mother.
At the heart of this village stands my own mother, a beacon of strength and unwavering faith. A God-fearing woman who has gracefully navigated the journey of raising seven children, she is the epitome of love and resilience. Watching her has been a masterclass in motherhood, teaching me the profound significance and beauty of this sacred role.
As I ventured into the uncharted territories of motherhood and entrepreneurship, creating “Science.Teacher.Mom LLC,” it was my mother who stood steadfastly by my side. Her support was not just in the grand gestures, but in the countless, often unseen, acts of love. She answered every call for help, lent her wisdom in times of doubt, and celebrated every small victory with the joy only a mother can.
To my mother: Your influence has woven itself into the very fabric of who I am, and for that, I am eternally grateful. You have not only raised a daughter but also nurtured an educator, an entrepreneur, and a mother who hopes to impart the same love and strength to her own children.
And to the rest of my village – family, friends, mentors, and the many souls who have offered their support in myriad ways – this journey would not have been the same without you. You have been my pillars of strength, my sounding boards, and my cheerleaders.
