We had the good fortune of connecting with Quincy Wise and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Quincy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Believe it or not, I saw a post on Instagram and I literally thought “Oh, I can do that!” I’ve been doing Graphic Design for years between my full-time job and freelance clients it was becoming less enjoyable. So I was debating getting back into painting, drawing or trying something new. I follow a lot of artist on Instagram and for awhile I’ve been following an artist who makes landscapes with resin. One day she broke a coaster and tried making a replacement with resin. It was pretty dope to watch and I immediately said “Oh, I can do that!”and immediately went down a Google, Youtube and Instagram wormhole.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Going to school and working a marketing related job made it quite easy to plan how to start my company. Planning was definitely the easy part, but of course getting it off the ground was the most difficult. I was honestly surprised by how receptive people were to my business and how quickly my following went up, but gaining consistent buyers has been hard. When my company started I was accepting followers via “dm” and the order were coming in so much that I made an Etsy shop, but now I’ve hit a lull. It’s currently 1:53 pm on Black Friday and I have yet to make a sale. It’s slightly discouraging, but I decided to take this time to figure out what I can do differently for the next Black Friday. Starting Quinessentials has been an inspirational experience and I’ve truly been enjoying my new creative outlet. I know every business has it’s ups and downs so I refuse to let this stop me. I was excited about participating in a popup shop, but navigating a business during the COVID era has been tricky. All the readers need to know about me is that I’m not a quitter and they should be prepared to see a lot more of me!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely be somewhere with tacos or sushi!! A good day would probably include going glassblowing with my squad at Decatur Glassblowing followed by my favorite Mexican restaurant, Nuevo Laredo Cantina, located where the transplants call “West Midtown.” I’m now a dedicated plant mom so I love going to nurseries or maybe exploring Hobby Lobby for hours (it’s possible).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
According to everyone in my life I’ve always had a fierce/go-getter attitude. Of course as you go through life things start to get to you and you have to make some adult decisions. As a result, I wasn’t really happy with where my life was at the moment. I was feeling really small and disappointed with myself, but then I read this book. It was Elaine Welteroth “More Than Enough.” This book sparked something in me! She reminded me of who I was, what I stand for and what I wanted out of my life. With that along with the undying love and support of my sistah circle I knew anything was possible! I started making a game plan, seeking encouragement from my friends, referring to the highlighted lines in Elaine’s book and here we are now! I honestly didn’t think I’d ever be doing an interview about my work which let’s me know that all of this has been worth it.
