We had the good fortune of connecting with yoaspire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi yoaspire, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process for starting my own business is simply just going for it. Sometimes people are nervous or hesitant when it comes to starting out because they’re worried about failing, or what people will think of them. but I say always just go for it and learn from your mistakes as you go. I’m constantly learning new things about what works and what doesn’t in my own career, It’s all just a part of the process. Nobody else will ever see your vision as clearly as you do so you can’t let those people cloud your mind with doubt and negative thoughts.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a film director and video editor. I have been editing videos for 12 years now, I started when I was 11 years old and was desperately trying to be a YouTuber like any other kid my age lol. I had asked my dad to show me how to use Windows Movie Maker so I could edit clips of my favorite videogame at the time (Skate 3), and post them online. During this time, I discovered my passion for the art of video editing and the idea of making art from a computer. I’ve always had this inexplicable desire to create art and express myself ever since I was really young but never really succeeded at the more conventional forms of art like illustrating, painting, music, etc. But when I discovered video editing something just clicked and I knew that had I finally found the creative outlet I was looking for all that time. I didn’t start directing videos until a few years later when I was 17. It was actually someone who was a fan of my YouTube channel that suggested I start doing music videos, at the time I was still making edits of my videogame clips and making some miscellaneous videos with my camera. I instantly fell in love with directing music videos, the idea of having creative control of how a song is portrayed visually is really cool to me. As I began to learn more and more about directing through doing music videos I eventually started thinking about getting into filmmaking and making shorts. I always struggled with the writing and dialogue side of filmmaking which kind of discouraged me but in 2020 my brother began writing short stories and our mother encouraged us to take a shot at making our own films together as a team, with him as writer and me as director. Just like with music videos, I instantly fell in love with filmmaking and knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I love collaborating with my friends and different artists to bring a story to life and sitting back to watch the final result once it’s complete. I just love the feeling of watching something you spent so much time planning and working on to create and thinking “Wow, I really made this.” I am super grateful for where I am today and the things I have accomplished thus far, but I know I still have A LOT more work to do and I’m excited for the future. In the words of Kobe “Job not done yet.” I just want people to know that you don’t have to be extraordinary or super knowledgeable about something to work towards and achieve your goals. When I first started filmmaking I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or how to go about it, I knew nothing about business or how the process of making a film even went but through trial and error and the willingness to fail and keep going, I was able to learn and get better every time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Bianca’s Deli is a must! The #1 bacon egg and cheese spot in the area with the nicest staff. Also, since I’m a skater and most of my friends are too, we would definitely have to stop and see the homie Josh at Travel Skateshop to cop some new gear. Also right across the street from the shop is The Coffee Box. Great place to chill and grab a bev. Next stop would have to be Cristiani skatepark (the best skatepark in the world in my opinion) and just chill for the rest of the day there. Beautiful community of skaters at that park, always a vibe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would definitely like to shout out my brother Isaiah Moorehead. He’s my creative partner when it comes to the films we make. He writes all of our scripts and is a huge part of my life and journey, I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today without him, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. I would also like to shout out my parents of course for supporting me in my journey and believing in me from the beginning. I couldn’t be more grateful for the things they’ve done for me and the things they’ve instilled in me. Also, My high school friend and Assistant Director on almost all my projects Lauren Elise. She’s a huge asset to our film crew and a valued member of The Local Losers. I would also like to thank my high school teachers Mr. Brighouse and Ms. Palermo (Diva LP). They have been behind me since the beginning and I can’t thank them enough for their support.

I also want to shout out my lifelong friend LJ (Lawrence Luc, aka LJ The Alien). He has been one of my closest friends for as long as I can remember and he’s the behind-the-scenes goat! He literally shot the behind-the-scenes at my first-ever music video shoot and he’s just always down to lend a hand at all times. Super grateful to have him in my life. He also makes fire music!

Lastly, just all my friends in general, I’ve been blessed to have genuine friends who support my goals and believe in me. They have no idea how much the things they do mean to me, no matter how small and I’m forever grateful for all of them.
