We had the good fortune of connecting with Scarves and Spikes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scarves and Spikes, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a group that loves soccer and Atlanta United, the three of us have been writing and contributing to Dirty South Soccer, Major League Soccer, and a variety of other outlets for years. We started the Dirty South Soccer Twitter Spaces post-match show in early 2022 and the listenership grew massively in a matter of weeks. During the World Cup in November and December we spoke about turning that success into an Atlanta United and general soccer podcast, and we thought it would be best to take advantage of the momentum of the World Cup and of Apple purchasing the broadcast rights to Major League Soccer, since that would bring in a worldwide audience. We prepared during the MLS offseason and were ready for our first Scarves and Spikes show a few weeks before Atlanta United played their first game at the end of February.

What should our readers know about your business?
When we first started the Twitter Spaces show on Dirty South Soccer, people loved that they could essentially “dial-in” like a talk-radio show and vent, praise, bemoan, or otherwise express their feelings after an Atlanta United match. We had a variety of people come on and talk and listen, some whom we never imagined. People from countries in South America and Europe would listen and talk, we had Atlanta United’s former captain and centerback Michael Parkhurst visit, and we were listened to by everyone from Atlanta fans to other professional soccer players to MMA fighter Charles Oliveira. We wanted our podcast to keep that “community” feel by allowing folks to drop comments on the live show that we could then touch on, but we also wanted to bring guests from around the industry to give their own insight into matches. This led to us being able to bring in Apple TV/MLS announcers on a weekly basis, as well as other industry insiders. We make sure to stay consistent by doing our show every week, and also creating other episodes like our popular “player ratings.”

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For the three of us, we definitely wouldn’t be where we’re at if it weren’t for Dirty South Soccer. Tyler and Sydney have been writing for the site for a few years thanks to Joe Patrick and Rob Usry, and last year the opportunity came along for Tommy to hop onboard so all three of us could host the post-match Twitter Spaces. Dirty South Soccer has been a vital stepping stone for each of us and has helped open many other opportunities we wouldn’t otherwise have. Big shoutout to everyone over at DSS!
