We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Vetter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greg, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The top three priorities every business owner needs to have are: 1. Sell. 2. Sell. 3. Sell. And when they have finished doing those, to sell even more. There is nothing more important than understanding and acting on the habit of selling daily. High sales volume covers controllable expenses, noncontrollable expenses, and operational misdirection and mistakes. It is absolutely no fun not having funds to cover your expenses. The easiest way to sell is by asking for referrals when your client is happy, or is appreciative of your service or product. It’s all in the timing of the asking.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business in the ’80s here in Atlanta. Some of us created the organizing industry back then as there wasn’t one. When I moved to Atlanta in 1981, I went on 60 informational interviews with my resume and job objective. The goal was to get feedback as to whether what I wanted to do was viable, if I was qualified to do it, and hopefully, be referred to someone who was looking for someone like me. Unfortunately no one could refer me to what I was looking for because there was no industry doing it.
So I started my own business. Two lessons I learned that would have helped me tremendously would have been to get a mentor as it is very tough to run a business by yourself without advice. The second would have been for me to spend more money and not have a scarcity mentality which unfortunately many small business people seem to have.
I created an organizational system called A Vetter Way® which allows you to find and store information in five seconds and utilize a system of how to work from an important rather than urgent focus. Back then there were only appointment books and time management courses. I worked experientially with clients, 1 on 1, in their office, with their computer, email and paper. At The Coca-Cola Company, I personally coached and organized over 150 of their executives and employees, 1 on 1, in a 15 year time period. I have written four books/workbooks and contributed to another book.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The North Georgia Mountains, Stone Mountain, all of the Civil War battle locations, the restaurant on the top floor of the Westin Peachtree Hotel, and The Aquarium.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Keith Hall, VP of Operations for Le Chateau Great Steaks, for teaching me the value of sales volume over profit. Dr. Russ Osmond, International Psychologist, for his continual referral of my services. Mike Semarau, Retired Assistant VP of Human Resources at The Coca-Cola Company, for giving me the opportunity to introduce my service to Coca-Cola. Tom Blackstock, Retired VP of Manufacturing at The Coca-Cola Company, for allowing me to work with his entire organization.
