We had the good fortune of connecting with Black Bobby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bobby, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
EB White once said that he “wakes up everyday determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time, which makes planning the day a bit difficult.” Every since I heard that quote I have purposely tried to live my life this way. I try to match my passions, interests and idealism with the actions I take, opportunities I pursue and people I am around. I like how the quote challenges me to live a full life and make an impact.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I mostly make music, but all of my content is rooted in my life’s story, education and experiences which are truly unique. I tell stories about me and the people/orgs around me. I am from DC, I went to school and was active in politics in Boston and then moved to Miami to make music after working on the Obama Campaign. I’ve lived a full life that does not typically get presented via traditional media. My main challenge has been for people to see that the talents I have, etc are possible to come from a person that does not look like they expect me to look or act. I refuse to put on a show for people and fit in some box. I represent myself authentically in every situation and if I can’t I exit. I want the world to see the diversity within the Black community and within urban America. We are not all one way. We do not all share the same story. Many of our stories never get told and people have a warped impression of Black people, given the focus of corporate media. We need more exposure for other stories.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live on the Eastside, but am down to travel for dope things! I love EAV, Inman Park, Little 5, Hampton + Hudson, Thumbs Up, Little Trouble, Krog & Ponce Markets, Madison Yards, El Tesoro, Wish, Social Status, Good Times, A Ma Manier, The Clermont Roof and The General Muir.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shout out to Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Robert Kennedy and John Kennedy. These people did something no person should have to- they died advocating for freedom and equality. Also, everyone that taught me the right way to do things in Boston, especially those in the nonprofit community. Finally, every Native Washingtonian who dared to be an individual.
