Meet Tyra Moore | Community Leader

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyra Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyra, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
What makes me happy is seeing that I am making a difference and impact. Being able to have the resources, items and a voice to help others like me and or preventing them from being like me. Being able to assist families in need with everyday necessities. Seeing the smiles on families faces because they know I can help them and will not judge them.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hello, my name is Tyra Moore and I am the Founder of A Girl Like Me Inc. A Girl Like Me Inc is a non profit organization that helps Girls, Teens, Teen Moms, and Young Moms between the ages of 11 to 25. We provide free diapers, wipes, baby milk and food. New and gently used baby items, clothing and shoes and personal hygiene kits. We also provide resources and a mentoring program from Girls, Moms, and Young Moms between the ages of 11 to 17. We strive in helping all Girls, Teens, Teen Moms, and Young Moms with the struggles they may be facing.
From personal experience of being pregnant at the age of 14 years old in 2007, and nobody knew. I gave birth the same week that my mom finally found out. I did not have anything for my baby but when my mom told everyone, my family, friends and community came together to make sure that I and the baby had everything we needed, and it lasted for a few years. From that moment, I promised myself that I would one day pay it all forward by helping Girls, Teens, Teen Moms and Moms.
I most excited about keeping my word as a 14 year old girl, saying that I was going to pay it forward. I knew I couldn’t pay everyone that helped me back but I could help others like me and also prevent it to happening to girls and teens as well.
I overcame Many challenges but not listening to what others thought about me and the decisions I made, I saw clearly that although the situation wasn’t the right situation back when I was a teen but it also was a lession and a story that needed to be told to others. It wasn’t easy but I kept my eye on the prize which was making sure I really make impact and help families in need.
I want people to know we shouldn’t be never judge anyone, we were all put on this earth to help one another and also pay it forward. We should all stick together and make sure we help all in need, if we don’t have the answers we can help search for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming to visit I would take them to Atlanta forsure lol. We would hit a few brunch spots, KOD brunch and live music is a hot, we would hit the trap museum, we would got to bonfire, the peacock, get a massage at the art of touch and of course go to slutty vegan.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my daughter Samari Mona’ Malone because she saved my life. I had Samari at 14 years old. Nobody knew I was pregnant, my mom found out on a Tuesday and in that same week on a Friday I gave birth to her. I didn’t have anything and because of the huge response of our family, friends and community providing baby items to me for her, I decided to pay it forward in start an organization called A Girl Like Me Inc. My Daughter saved my life because one day I was going to commit suicide because of all the harsh backlash I was receiving, not from outside my home but in my home. I was told my life was going to be over, I wasn’t going to be anything etc. To keep hearing it, I couldn’t take it nomore, so one day when nobody wasn’t home but me and my baby, I planned my exit. I had ropes and everything and prepared to go downstairs and hang myself, before I was about to leave something hit me and I said wait, if I go downstairs to hang myself whose going to save my daughter, how long will it take for someone to rescue her, what if something happened to her and she dies. All that came across my mind and I was just looking at her as she smiled. I also thought to myself she’s doesn’t know or see you as a teen mom, she just knows you as her Mom and she’s all that matters and I didn’t kill myself because of her .
