We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaslynn Gholson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaslynn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to help my inner child/be my own hero. Growing up I always wished someone would just accept me for who I was and show me that everything was going to be ok. In writing my books it has allowed me to be who I needed back then, and also be that person to someone else in doing the same for them. Showing my transformation from my dark beginnings isn’t just my growth, it’s hope for someone else. I use to bake with my aunt growing up, when she passed away it became how I always kept her with me. Baking professionally isn’t just for me, its for the hope she gave the younger me that thought I wasn’t good at anything.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Something that sets me apart with my books is my ability to tell my story and paint a picture through the use of poetry. Also the way I connect to a multitude of people due to various experiences. What sets me apart in baking is baking from scratch, a lot of bakers find themselves taking short cuts but I know my flavors are explosive from the love and time I dedicate to my desserts. My journey has not been easy by any means but I enjoy it because I’m always learning something new, not just about business but about myself as well, love your journey.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I suggest the botanical gardens, I love going on walks and it’s beautiful there. As for food It’s so much delicious food here I find it hard to choose just one but I’m a huge fan of Italian food so Maggiano’s is definitely worth the trip.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Growing up I read a book titled “A child called it” by Dave Pelzer. I still remember being on the edge of my seat worried about the little boy and wondering if he was ok. It gave me the courage to tell my story but made me realize I wanted to make sure people knew I was a survivor and that I’m ok, thank you! As an adult I wrote poetry to express my feelings and later became a big fan of Maya Angelou. Her strength and wisdom is incredible and I hope to be as amazing and memorable as her. When It comes to baking I owe it all to my Aunt Xavier and I hope she is smiling down on me and is truly proud, joy is more than just her middle name, it was what she gave me.
