24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week. Junior investment bankers regularly work 80-90 hours a week. Many other high profile professions require the same level of commitment. Often those on the outside claim that working 80-90 hours a week is bad/wrong/terrible/silly/etc but we’ve spoken with so many folks who say working that much has been the best decision of their life – it allowed them to develop a deep and strong skill set far faster than would have been possible otherwise. In other words, by working 2x the hours, they were able to generate 5x or more the rewards. And depending on where you are in your career, investing heavily in your skills and competence can pay dividends for a long time.
Parks Schoen | Artist & Tennis Coach
Work life balance is something that has been at the forefront of my thoughts in this past season. Starting your own business is consuming and hard, yet at the same time so worth it. As I have begun to start up my art business, I have a full-time job as an academy tennis coach. In hours I’m not on the tennis court, I am in the studio dreaming, creating, and planning. Having a full-time job and starting up my own business is a grind, but it has been worth it. Read more>>
Killa Marti | Attorney and Firm Owner
I have adopted the concept of work-life integration instead of work-life balance. I don’t recall where I heard this but the concept of work-life balance is a bit of a fallacy. We love our lives when we do more of what we love whether it’s at work or outside of work. I prefer that idea because not everyone is energized by “down time” as we have come.to understand it. It becomes more about fitting in the things that you love. Read more>>

Dominique Mitchell | Entrepreneur
While being a full time entrepreneur I worked as a foster care case manager. Working as a foster care case manager was very time consuming and demanding. I would work 60 hours a week and still had to find time to do homework and make graduation gear. There were many long nights and times where I had to pay $100 or more to ensure that my customers received their graduation gear on time. I realized that I need a better work life balance. I recently retook an Enneagram test, a personality typing system that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. As always, my Enneagram is a three or the Achiever Type. The Achiever is a personality type focused on accomplishments and success. Their identities are attached to their achievements. This personality type often achieves external validation, which feeds their need to feel worthy. I recognize that people are more complex than a personality test, but there are highs and lows that I’ve always experienced with constantly striving for success and achievement. Read more>>
Tyler Russell | Real Estate Advisor
When I first started in Real Estate I was anxious to get any business I could, so I developed some pretty unhealthy habits as it related to work-life balance. I was always on call to respond immediately to any calls/texts/emails. This constant “ON” led to burnout and I have had to reset boundaries for when I respond to client contacts. It is still important for clients to feel like I am available to guide them through a transaction but I am human and I have to take time for my mental and physical health, which means setting aside time for relaxation with family and friends. When I am happy and healthy I am better suited to serve others. Read more>>
