We had the good fortune of connecting with Deanndra Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deanndra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk-taking is a huge part of entrepreneurship. In fact, I wouldn’t have started my business if I wasn’t willing to take risks.
I didn’t always dream of being an entrepreneur, but when I found myself as a single mother with no college degree and no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I knew that something had to change. That’s when I decided to start my own business—it was the only thing that made sense at the time.
I wasn’t sure how things were going to work out, but then I realized how much joy it brought me when people expressed how much they loved their STATE YOUR MOOD products! That’s when I realized how much power there is in taking risks and following your passion.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had my fair share of struggles, but that’s normal for any entrepreneur in any industry. If you had asked me what I would’ve done differently, I wouldn’t change anything. It was a learning process, and the lessons I learned were challenging—but they were also exactly what I needed to get where I am today.
STATE YOUR MOOD gives you endless ways to be you, no matter what form it takes. So when you scroll through our tiers of products, you’ll find ways to express your unique style and personality – whether that’s an ultra-chic or laid-back luxury. Our candles are hand-poured and made with soy wax and a wooden wick. They are the highest quality possible, and we take pride in every single one that leaves our shop.
We love creating fragrances that are new and exciting but also comfortable and familiar—we want people to feel like they’ve already smelled our candles before! We’ve got scents for every season (and mood), so there’s something for everyone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a week to show my best friend the best time in Atlanta. Our highlighted itinerary would be as follows:
– Drink coffee at Black Coffee ATL on Monday
– Visit Atlanta Botanical Garden on Tuesday
– Pamper ourselves at Buckhead Nail Lounge on Wednesday
– Experience Big Escape Rooms on Thursday
– Eat at the Bone Garden Cantina on Friday
– Shop at ATL Artisan Market on Saturday
– Have brunch at Sunday Brunch ATL on Sunday
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think one of the most important things to remember when you’re starting out is that you’re never alone in this. Even though it might feel like you’re the only person who doesn’t know what they’re doing or the only person who didn’t have a plan for life when they were younger, there are always people around you who can help you find your way. Everyone has their own unique path, and that’s what makes life so exciting!
I’m grateful for those people—the ones who helped me find my way.
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom, who always told me that I could do anything I wanted to do. She always encouraged me to be the best version of myself and never let me settle for less. Without her guidance, I wouldn’t have taken the leap into entrepreneurship.
I would also like to dedicate this shoutout to my daughter. My daughter is the person who gives me purpose and makes me want to be better every day. She is my biggest fan and supporter. She always encourages me and tells me how proud she is of me. Which as a mother, is all I could ever ask for.
