We had the good fortune of connecting with Venus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Venus, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m a firm believer that you won’t get different results by doing the same thing, that’s where taking risks comes in. Great risk yields great rewards, but not just any risks. I tend to be very calculated with my decisions even when it involves me going out in a limb. Taking the risk of leaving everything I am used to and going to college in an area that I didn’t know paid off because it allowed me to be in an environment that inspired me. I would sometimes take time off of my conventional job to focus on the things I am passionate about (especially if it made more money), which isn’t something that I recommend, but I felt it made sense to me at the time and got me a little further than I was before. Even starting a clothing business, you risk wasting your time and resources if your products don’t sell but you never know what the results will be unless you try . Taking risks looks different for different people, it’s just a matter of what makes sense for you and your situation at the time
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a DJ and aspiring music producer. I’ve also been musically inclined, it’s like speaking another language, which is also something I find easy for me to pick up on. I used to listen to a lot of pop and edm music when I was in middle school and one day I decided to be the person middle school me would be proud of and bought my first dj controller on a whim in college in 2018. I’ve learned plenty of lessons and I’m still learning today, mainly with the technological aspect of things and keeping my equipment secure, along with the social aspect when it comes to talking to people, establishing relationships with people and branding myself on social media. I want y’all to know that in a few years imma do things that not many women are doing in the music industry and I don’t like speaking too much on so imma let my actions show.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So the seasons and my schedule would def determine what we are doing. Let’s say it’s fall/winter. I’d take them to the botanical gardens to see the lights and maybe even Calloway Gardens. I’ve always wanted to do a mini trip to Chateau Elan for some wine tasting action so that’s def something I’d consider. Gotta take em to the trap music museum and magic city or the flame. Maybe even cheetah for the food. Bowling at somewhere like the painted pin would be fun too. If I’m spinning an event I’d invite them to pull up
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Def wanna give a shout out to God, because I don’t know where I’d be without Divine Timing. My mom as well for getting me involved in art and music so early whether it was piano lessons, buying me a guitar or art workshops. I wanna shout out The Alchemist for being able to put a lot of my beliefs in words. I also wanna give a shout out to my DJ friends Jordan Jetson, Champagne Trap, Marauder, Smarttt and Poizon for being there through my technical difficulties, inspiring and motivating me, and sharing opportunities with me
