We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Fenderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Music was always in my family I played snare drums, I use to be in my church chior. I loved to mess with my car stereo systems growing up. So I understood hertz and frequencys a little.
Music kinda chose me. I had to have surgery and I was stuck at home for over a month. Jimmie Fenderson suggested that I needed to do music. I told him that its not for me. He said you have a voice and it won’t hurt to try. I was still reluctant because I was concentrating on healing from my surgery. Jimmie would not stop suggesting that I do music. He was getting on my last nerve. Until one day he said he was about to record a song and he wanted me to get on the song with him. I was like bro I just had surgery. He gave me the title and said write something down pertaining to the title. I wrote something down just to do it. Next thing I know he calls me one day atleast four times telling me to come record what I wrote. I said to myself I’m not doing music. Jimmie kept calling until I finally got out the bed pain from surgery and all and headed to record what I wrote.
Next thing I know I wrote another song. Then another. I realized music was very therapeutic. It allowed me to express myself. It was like I was healing. Jimmie said we can make money doing music and all I had to do is put forth the same work ethic that I did when working for someone else toward the music. Jimmie said my work ethic is my strength. I believe the thing that defines a person is their work ethic. I may not be the best but I knew if I practiced over and over I could get better and better.
I wanted to help by brother so I started doing the music with no plans of a career. I’m still doing music today because its fun and I think God wanted me to say something.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is I face every challenge win or loose I don’t quit. I’m proud to be from Montgomety, Alabama. People always say they want to leave Alabama because there are not enough opportunties here. I take pride in where I’m from and I want to change the narrative about Alabama. I want to be known as a lyrical artist who has subject matter that helps the youth. While at the same time maintaining style or swag. I got to wear I am today by believing in God. I’m not the most spiritual guy but I believe I can’t do it alone. It was not easy growing up. I witnessed some violence in the neighborhoods I grew up in but I’m not complaining because I felt if I could survive the hood then I could survive in this world. The hood is what helped to strengthen me. One thing I’d like the world to know about the brand GFAM. It stand for God, Family, and Money.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to God first. My mother Dora Fenderson. This woman went through a lot. She had me at a young age and we grew together. She is the reason I’m here today. My brother Jimmie Fenderson. He never stopped believing that I could do music. My brother Diamond Fenderson never quit attitude is to be admired. My grandmother Alflorence James, is the woman that played the piano and gave us all the blueprint. She always said you got to work twice as hard in this world. Its not fair but life won’t be fair. My father Jimmie Fenderson, taught me how to move through life with the proper instincts. Manuel Williams played a big role because he provided a spiritual foundation in which I learned in church. Shout out to everyone that came into my life. Everyone played a role, I’m just the product of my environment.
