We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Kiel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Years ago, I found a great resource at the Savannah Entrepreneurial Center where any resident could take a 12-week course on how to start a business and all that it entails. After taking the course, establishing a new business, and looking back, I realized how many people from my class did not join me in the long haul. Starting a business is hard work, and there are so many details to cover. What if I could be that resource to folks? Could my knack for numbers and budgeting help? Could my attention to detail make a great website that attracts customers? It has for many businesses in the United States, and I look forward to helping many more clients going forward. My target market is small start-ups that are looking for assistance in the areas of websites, copywriting, social media, and bookkeeping.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Savannah, Georgia is a very special place. Why? Because it is literally filled to the brim with entrepreneurs. Folks who want to help, to network, to achieve great things, great causes, and create amazing success stories. I don’t think I could have made Help Your Small Biz happen if I had not been living in Savannah. The city literally wants all of us to succeed and provides the tools to do so. It’s really quite a magical thing that is happening down here in the tiny corner where Georgia meets South Carolina, and all are welcome to achieve their dreams. Was it easy to get to where I am now? Absolutely not, and I am so grateful for that. Perseverance and determination make the wheels turn, that’s for sure! I’ve learned to be more patient, and that’s such a cliche.. a Yankee who needs to slow down in the deep South. Of course! And it has been so enjoyable to slow it down, that I have no intentions of going back to a fast-paced life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well now that depends, because we have so much to offer. If Christine is coming to town, we are eating fine food and drinking great wine, and visiting smart museums. I would take her to Vic’s on the River for a great wine selection and their signature dish, scallops and risotto. We would stroll over to the Jepson Center for the Arts to take in the latest exhibits. Afterward, how about a craft cocktail on a rooftop bar? We probably would to head over to the Peregrin Rooftop Lounge which is nestled in the heart of the city and has incredible views of the squares and architecture. She would like some spa time, so a planned day at Spa Bleu is the picture too. But if Karin is coming to town? It’s time grab your coffee and head out! We are picking up a boat from my friends at Freedom Boat Club and traveling along the Savannah river to look for shark teeth on the beach. We will grab bikes and ride the Skidaway State Park trails. We will eat from food trucks by Latin Chicks and Smashed Burger. We will grab mimosas and puff pastries at Cafe M and take in the river walk. We would head to Service Brewing Co. for some craft beer and play a game of cornhole. Two very different trips, but Savannah is so great and so vast with entertainment, both can easily be achieved.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story is never told without my husband, Chris mentioned. He is my #1. Chris always offers encouragement and support to aid my business achievements. He and I are entrepreneurs, both having a thriving business to run. He has a handyman business, Call Chris LLC, that has been very successful since its inception in early 2021. I play a small role in his business by way of bookkeeping and marketing. He does what he does best- manage the work load, make all the clients happy, and fix anything. After 20 years of mending airplanes (and making them go “up” as I used to say) and managing a customer service line, you learn a thing or two. Plus, his natural talent is generational as his father is also a handyman. I am incredibly proud of him for his success, and for the joy he has brought into our lives by being small business owners.
