We had the good fortune of connecting with Howard “Skip” Nedrick Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Howard “Skip”, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I came into comedy in the middle of 2017 during a lot of personal matters that had me in the dumps. It became an outlet and helped to channel self expression in a healthy way. I think comedy was a derivative of me hosting events a few years earlier and I realized comedy is storytelling. It is something I am passionate about and finding ways to make people laugh is the best feeling in the world. That one skill has been impactful in a lot of others in my life (professional/creative/personal).

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I look at my style of comedy as using my POV and sharing it out to the people. I watched a lot of Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Martin Lawrence, and other kings of comedy to understand storytelling. It is a personal thing and as more new talented comedians developed, you see how they gained their audience. I make people laugh alongside my pain to bring people in. I want my style to be as inclusive as possible and being the center of that experience helps out greatly.

I used 2017 to early 2020 to network a lot in the NYC comedy scene. I did a lot of open mics and asked for guest spots to shows. I craved out a decent following so I could product my own shows before Covid hit. Now I am working to bring them back and work on hosting the open mic as well.

A few lessons I learned along the way has to be centered around evolution personally and accepting critique. You have to stay connected with your peers and mentors. Sometimes you need to work on your professional life to make sure your creative life can be productive. Other people’s wins do not take away from you. Everyone wins at their own pace. Jealousy ruins the elevation of the craft.

Last thing is to HAVE FUN doing what you do. If you are only doing it for the money, it won’t be worth it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For places to see, I would definitely take them to Highline Park and South Street Seaport in Manhattan. In Brooklyn, the promenade, Brooklyn Museum, and Coney Island. I could go on and on for other boroughs as well.

For places to eat: Manhattan I would pick Lucy’s Cantina (great tacos and drinks), Sweet Chicks, and Juniors (cheesecake galore).

NYC has so many amazing places and people, it would take several trips to properly digest it all honestly.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank all of the comedians who have been mentors and peers to me. Mentors I have to start with Whitney Chanel Clark, Joe Hill, Eva Evans, Smokey Suarez, Omar Thompson, and Rashad Bashir. Those individuals have made me reflect on what is my style and how to get better. For my peers; Julio Diaz, Julio Rivera, Nic Trinidad, Stephon Bishop, Travis Harris, Talent Harris, JJ Mattise, Dori Dimplez, Shells, Onika McLean, Dara Jemmott and many more. Comedians book each other and help build each other. Without them I wouldn’t have the stages to get my experience points up.
