We had the good fortune of connecting with Bridgette Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bridgette, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have pursued quite a few passions in my life and have been successful in many areas, but I have never found an industry that I am more passionate about than entertainment. I started going on auditions and booking jobs when I was 15 years old and I loved it from the very beginning. After college, I got a job as a radio show host with a Top 40 station which I absolutely loved. I got to perform, entertain, interact with the community, show my personality and have FUN! It really was a dream job. The only thing I could never fully accept was the inability to choose how to spend my own time. I found myself thinking, “As an adult, I shouldn’t have to ask another adult if I can stay home to take care of my husband after surgery or take a few days off to attend my sister’s out-of-town graduation.” I thought, if I could stay in the entertainment industry and be in charge of my own schedule, that would be the PERFECT job for me. Then I met Christine Harris, the Founder of Premiere Model Management in Florida. She was a strong, independent woman running her own successful business scouting and developing models. I began to work with her as an assistant and was so in awe of the career she had created for herself. She saw potential in me and offered me the opportunity to open my own branch of Premiere. It was a long process and was pretty terrifying at times, but now I’m in charge of my own life and am still working in the industry I’ve always loved.
What should our readers know about your business?
I worked as a freelance promotional model, spokesmodel, and actor for many years before I came onto the agency side of things. I know how much dedication it takes in order to be successful in this industry and how discouraging it can be at times. I really didn’t have anyone to give me advice or teach me how to navigate it all. The process of constantly submitting for jobs, trying to get agents and casting directors to pay attention to you, auditioning, getting rejected and doing it all over again can be pretty emotionally draining. Even though I ended up being successful at it, I wish I would’ve had someone to tell me what to expect, how to tell the difference between a scam and a legitimate job, and to maybe provide a few shortcuts. This is what I try to do as a Mother Agent for my models and actors: encourage them, protect them and provide counsel for them when things get confusing or overwhelming. Our emphasis on honesty, loyalty and support is what differentiates us from the rest.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love a Girls’ Night! Whether it’s margaritas and queso at the local Mexican restaurant or wine and sushi at Izumi’s, I’m always down for gossip and girl time. Plus I’ve always got my model scouting goggles on and love to hand out cards to beautiful faces I see around town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family has been the strongest support system throughout my decision to start my own business. Without their love and encouragement, it is a guarantee that I would not have gone through with it. Opening your own business is scary! 100% of the pressure to be successful falls on you as the owner and if you fail, there’s no one else to blame. There were many times when I would find myself losing all hope and confidence and questioning my ability to keep going. My family was always there to build me back up, telling me they believed in me and they knew that if anyone could do this, it would be me.
