We had the good fortune of connecting with LauraAnn Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LauraAnn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business, SupportED Consultancy, LLC is as follows: I desired to use my experiences as a special education classroom teacher and administrator to increase teacher and principal knowledge base in the areas of special education compliance and instruction. Often times teachers and principals have difficulty understanding special education processes and staying compliant with related documentation. In my roles as an educator I noticed that my colleagues struggled with small group instruction and lesson planning for students with special needs and struggling readers. Not only teachers and principals but parents as well. Supporting parents in understanding educational processes creates a cohesive team to support students’ growth in learning. I now consult throughout several states supporting school districts with instruction, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and special education areas of need; through professional development.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Consulting Firm SupportED Consultancy, provides inclusive educational support services to districts, organizations and parents. Supports are in the forms of academic instruction, instructional strategies, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, special education, and being a thought partner with administrators to drive intentional instruction. All of these support services are done through professional development opportunities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting and I wanted to show her the best time ever, the itinerary would be as follows: to start the day get into some hot yoga, then have cheers over mimosas at the most popular vegan brunch spot in town, shower up to catch a museum exhibit in the afternoon, from there hop to a roof top happy hour for some speakeasy style cocktails, fill out bellies again by grabbing some sushi and sake for dinner, catch a late night comedy show, and then grab some bar bites from a brewery or whiskey/bourbon bar, and to cap off the night go to Insomnia Cookies to appease that sweet tooth before heading home. Who wouldn’t want to be my friend?!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my fourth grade teacher, Michelle Grooms for fostering my love for reading. To Laura Boris, a special education teacher who taught me the in and outs of teaching exceptional populations. To McLeod Bethune for being a pioneer in education in the African American community.
