We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Lawson-Bradfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I operate from a place of excellence – meaning, I bring excellence to the table, every single time. When employed, you’re not given a choice on who your clients are or who your coworkers are. This isn’t fun when you’re a top performer. While I love pulling people up, it becomes burdensome when it’s an ongoing expectation. I could only give into the cognitive dissonance for so long. I always knew that I was destined for something greater than being a cog in the wheel of corporate – I’d been told this by all my managers & mentors, to whom I’m immensely grateful. The bug put in my ear at a young age is what allowed me to take the path less traveled. And, I’ve done a decent job of it in the nearly 5 years that I’ve been in business.
At the end of the day I’m wholly motivated by relationships and community. I don’t believe in saving a large entity 7 figures just for the board to engage in stock buy-backs, or the CEO to buy another yacht. I’d much rather help the single father enroll his kid in dance practice by helping him save 30k a year than find another conglomerate 750k that they’d never miss to begin with.
Corporate is ultimately a rat-race; designed to extract as much as it can from you while you’re drinking the from the fountain. I chose instead to figure out how to capitalize on my own skills. It’s been my greatest journey of personal development. I wouldn’t change it even on the hard days (and there are plenty of those) .
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Clover Collective specializes in marketing operations, so we typically work with those who are pursuing an online presence or are already content creators – not to say that our clients have to be in marketing, but rather need a marketing lens for their business. We operate something like an operational pop-up shop, meaning I have screened & recruited specialists for just about anything needed within an organization, from virtual admins to copywriters to tech support. My group functions as an ecosystem. There is strength in bringing high-caliber individuals to a high-caliber client – we all work as a well-oiled machine and know what to expect from one another which creates an incredible client experience. Our expertise is in pulling all the strings of business together, improving the innards of the organization, and then optimizing all the people involved so we can go to the next level. Our most recent case study experienced a 30% growth in 5 months and experienced a 2.5x increase in revenue from our efforts.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a bit of a nature nerd so most of my time is spent outdoors. You’ll probably catch us on bikes on the local trails or kayaking down the ethereal fresh-water springs. Another favorite is the bioluminescent nighttime kayaks where the water turns blue from the plankton lighting up. Hands down one of the coolest experiences to have.
I’m also a bit of a foodie – when friends visit, I love taking them to Ethiopian, Trinidadian, Egyptian, or Hawaiian restaurants.
And finally, we also have a Salvador Dali museum which is incredible. Can’t go wrong with a museum and some amazing food afterward!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Sarah. I’ve had many champions throughout my career, but the ongoing support & belief that she provides me is in no small part a reason for my success. She believes in me on the days I don’t believe in myself. It’s powerful to have that kind of support. Sometimes the mirror of what you want to be is just as important as the embodiment, and she does an amazing job at keeping me on track & believing in myself.
