Meet Izzy Lowell | Physician & Founder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Izzy Lowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Izzy, what do you attribute your success to?
At Queermed we believe in fairness and respect. That’s really it! Queermed provides affirming hormone therapy for transgender and nonbinary people of all ages. We serve patients across the Southeast, via telemedicine to reduce barriers to care. What we do shouldn’t be unusual or remarkable, but unfortunately it is very hard for trans and nonbinary people to find care. We are successful in what we do because we treat people with kindness and respect.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
While working at Emory’s Family Medicine Residency program as an Assistant Professor, I started the first Gender Clinic at Emory. Once people started hearing about it, patients would travel from out of state, sometimes 4-5 hours by car, to see me! This inspired me to start my own practice, Queermed, to increase accessibility to care for transgender and nonbinary people across the Southeast. Since starting Queermed 3 years ago, we have grown, with Chris Turner, NP, and Michael Scarborough, NP joining the team – I couldn’t ask for a more dedicated and passionate team. Most of the challenges we have faced are from a world that still feels like it is okay to discriminate against transgender and nonbinary people. Some insurance companies specifically exclude coverage for gender-related diagnoses! I am so angry that’s legal! But we have found ways to get people the care they need, despite the current political and institutional obstacles.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In COVID times, we would hit the off-Beltline trails early in the morning for a brisk stroll. Then pick up takeout coffee and bagels at Emerald City Bagels, followed by a trip to the Old Fourth Ward skate park with the kids and their scooters. If we could go to museums, etc, I would swing by the High Art Museum, Fernbank, Atlanta Zoo, and hear a concert at the Atlanta Symphony. In the evening, we would stroll through Little Five Points for an outdoor meal.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am in awe of our patients. Their strength, perseverence, and courage in the face of adversity is admirable. I love my job because I get to meet incredible people and hear their stories. And of course I would not be able to do any of this without the support of my family.
