We had the good fortune of connecting with DeJhanie Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeJhanie, how do you think about risk?
As a creative, taking risk is an essential part of your career. To be a great artist, specifically one in branding and marketing, success comes from thinking outside the box. Each project is a risk. I am tasked with the responsibility of ensuring each client’s brand or company can compete with giants in their respective markets.

I want to remind Individuals that all risks don’t have to be these grandiose gestures. There are also big rewards in taking small risks. It’s a collection of small things that add up to be big things.

In 2016, I took one of the biggest risks in my life. After graduating college with a degree in criminal justice I decided that I did not want to go to graduate school after already being accepted. Instead, I decided I wanted to go full throttle into building my business. That same year I’d get what I considered my ‘no turning back’ tattoo. I got a tattoo placed on my hand, and that’s what I considered to secure my belief that my brand would work for me. It would be extremely hard for me to get another corporate job with a tattoo on my hand so therefore I needed to put all my belief in myself to make this agency work to support myself.

That risk paid off. Over the years, I was able to make an essential mark in my industry. From gaining corporate clients to traveling all over the U.S for clients. I’ve designed multiple billboards that have gone live in different cities. I’ve conquered every financial goal I set for myself each year. And then, I started to get comfortable which meant it was time for another big risk.

In 2021, I took the huge risk of investing in a commercial space which is now known as the co-working space, Girl Code Lounge. I’m still deep into this risk but I believe the reward would be worth it. This will not only serve as a safe space for me but for all women creatives and entrepreneurs. Girl Code Lounge serves as a sanctuary for networking, creativity and productivity providing work and community spaces for women spanning age groups, multiple professions and diverse backgrounds.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my profession, my art focuses on graphic and web designs. It’s essential to building and developing brands. What sets me apart is that I am self taught. Most people at the level I am in my career went to school for graphics or film or had some form of formal training. I learned all I know by trial and error, YouTube, and colleagues. And it was nowhere near easy. I often doubted my abilities or thought I wasn’t as good as other people in this field. I had to learn to believe in my art. Landing my first corporate job as a senior graphic designer helped me realize I am just as good, if not better, than those who went to school for graphic design. I learned to stop doubting myself and I now push other self taught designers the same thing. Confidence is key!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I love a mixture of Eat, Play, Relax!

We have to go to Fantisi Med Spa for facials, Spondivitz for dinner , and finish off at Blue Lounge for hookah for our first day to set the tone.

Next day we have to visit the Botanical Gardens and finish off at Lilys for food and hookah.

Third day, shopping at Lenox and we have to go to juicy crab and end our night at Copper Cove!

And finish off with a rest day at Flo2s for sensory therapy and a nice dinner at STK on Peach Tree.

Some of my other favorite little spots to sprinkle through the itinerary includes Gold Room, Suite Lounge, Escobar, Boogalou, Restuarant 10 and Xperience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could not have gotten this far without the love and support of my mom. My mom plays a huge role in my success. She’s not only my mom, but also my therapist, financial advisor, brainstorming partner, etc. As a parent she was really supportive when I told her I was changing career paths and did not want to go back to school or work a 9-5 job anymore.

And secondly, my publicist played a huge role in me realizing my potential. She pushes me to not only see my worth but to charge my worth as well. I rarely make any big moves or important decisions without her being by my side.
