Meet Yasmine | Film Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasmine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yasmine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have a pretty funny relationship with risk – I traditionally try to play it safe but always still seem to end up in some form of risky situation. In recent times, I’ve decided to really lean into that though. You can’t make significant strides without risks, you don’t break down barriers, make change or impress the right people by flying under the radar. The irony of my avoidance of risk is the fact that so many people have taken a risk on me. So many people have given me opportunities that on paper I wasn’t qualified for at all, but they felt like I was worth the risk – I just fully produced my first film and I’m only 24 (and had never done anything near as intense as film producing)……that’s some risky biz! I feel like it’s only right that I adapt that mentality since I benefit so greatly from others having it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I don’t even really know what to title myself yet – I kind of do it all. I definitely would say I’m a producer but what I’m producing at any given time varies…which makes life pretty fun. I really just like making things happen, I think it’s kind of unnecessary to limit yourself, if a project aligns with my skillset and interest, whether it be a film, music video, event, etc – I’m going to take it on. I think that mindset in general is what I’m most proud of, I’m pretty early in my career and everything is new which used to really intimidate me but now I have this pretty unshakable confidence in my abilities. It’s funny though because no matter how confident you are, as a producer you’re always going to be shook by some aspect of a project you’re working on. I think it’s pretty hard to describe the entertainment industry because it really is it’s on beast, there’s like no real “rules” but at the same time so many. It’s really learning and understanding a balance but also creating your own groove within that because identity/branding is so important in this industry…you’re known for your balance. I think what sets me apart from others is my purpose behind my work – I really care about people and the experiences they have…I really try to lead with that and keep it at the forefront of my work. I want to make sure everyone feels important, respected and cared for – whether you’re a director or a production assistant. I just try to lead with kindness and empathy, which at times can get challenging when situations get stressful but that’s why it’s important to have a clear understanding of your personal ethos – it serves as a reset button.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to Thank God above all things. I prayed so much for an opportunity to be creative and contribute to the world in a way that I could be proud of…to be honest, I didn’t even know what that looked like but I find it truly amazing how God put the right people, organizations and opportunities on my path. If you want to achieve anything, dedicate consistent time to asking God to guide you and give you discernment and you’ll really end up exactly where you’re meant to be. In saying that, I think it’s only right to acknowledge the organization that has really poured into me – and that’s BlackStar,..they are a non profit organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of BIPOC through film (and various other forms of media). They really believed in me from the moment I met them and have empowered me to do so much. They gave me my first opportunity to event produce and film produce – it’s deep because I know there were more qualified candidates for both of those opportunities but they saw something in me that I can’t even really say I saw in myself, and that really ties back in to God building this path for me. I’m just extremely grateful for it all.
