We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Nishan Pressley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Nishan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Building a brand is more than just creating a persona or posting pretty pictures. And once I learned that, my brand soared.

I had to realize that building a successful brand is more about the people you are serving. How are you helping them? Are you informative, inspirational, motivational, encouraging? The list can go on.

I created AskDrNish as a way to SERVE my followers by teaching them about eye health and preventative eye care – while also focusing on motivating more minorities to pursue the career of optometry.

By being vulnerable, personable and serving my followers, I’ve been able to build the brand & community you see today!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a board-certified Optometrist currently practicing in Orlando, FL. I’m passionate about educating my patients & social media followers on the importance of eye health and preventative eye care.

I earned my Doctor of Optometry degree from The Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University.

I am the first African-American to graduate from the Accelerated Scholars Optometry program, where I completed my doctorate degree in only 3 years. This was a huge accomplishment, not only for me, but to pave the way for more African-American students to be admitted to and graduate from the Scholars Optometry Program.

The road was NOT easy, but well worth it. There were doubters and obstacles that tried to stop me from becoming BLACK HISTORY.. but God had a plan for me and saw me through!

The biggest lesson I learned during that time was to stay true to myself. Don’t dim your light to make others comfortable. Be You!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course, Orlando is the city of Magic! There’s Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and so many more tourist attractions (that’s a few days in itself! lol)

We’d swing over to Icon Park and ride the The Wheel while overlooking the city. Then we’d head to Downtown Orlando for some amazing food from Kres Chophouse, then walk it off around the famous Lake Eola!

Later, we’d hit up The Mall at Millenia and Orlando Premium outfits for some fire fits.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother is my #1 supporter and encouraged me to pursue optometry when I was in the 7th grade! I didn’t listen at first, but mom knows best and she knew this would be a career I would enjoy and prosper in.

She didn’t force me to pursue optometry, but just planted the seed. I researched & shadowed a plethora of other professions, and I always found myself back to optometry.

Without her, I wouldn’t know what I would be doing. So I will always thank her for the unconditional love & guidance she gave me (& is still giving me)! Love you mom!
