We had the good fortune of connecting with Nene Crews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nene, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
One piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is “you need to have a plan B in case your plan A does not work out”. This is a piece of advice I heard often in my younger years and it took a long time to unlearn this thought process. In my opinion this statement is fear based projected from others and can prevent a creative person from truly taking a risk that could be life changing. I am also a firm believer in manifestations and power of the tongue. If you have already “planned” for your plan A to fail, there is a good possibility it will. Once I stopped believing this piece of advice to be true, I was able to trust in what I knew and that was the inevitable success of my business. Now that I am aware, I try to tell others who have been told they needed a plan B, C or even D to stay focused on their plan A. If you can formulate many other plans to distract you from your real purpose, then you can find a million other ways to work your PLAN A!! Stay the course and it will pay off!!!
What should our readers know about your business?
I am CEO of Majestic Beauty By Nene where we specialize in all natural beauty products, skincare, lip care and cosmetics. I started this company in 2019 from ground zero. Having experienced major skin issues such as acne, eczema, dermatitis and dry skin, I was tired of being prescribed steroids, topical creams and other chemical based solutions from dermatologist. I wanted to create something that was not so toxic and detrimental to the skin & health. I also wanted to use makeup and lip care products that would not break me out. I found that even the over the counter products that were advertised as being specifically for sensitive skin, were still made with harmful ingredients. I knew I had to do something as I have a young daughter who has some of the same skin issues as I do and I wanted better her and the generations to come. What sets me apart from others is my years of experience and real passion for this industry. I am not just “making” products and selling them. I am formulating, studying, researching, learning, and applying my knowledge to ensure my products are the best on the market. I have experience as a hair stylist, makeup artist, beauty school alumni, and former salon coordinator for Ulta Beauty. I live and breathe the beauty industry and I feel you need to in order to be successful in whatever field you are in, Getting to where I am now was not easy at all. In addition to making my products by hand, I also designed my logo, my website, make and print my labels, designed my business cards and do everything from the ground up. I did this because I am a firm believer in building brick by brick. There is nothing wrong with starting small, just make sure you continue to think big. I overcome challenges truly by trial and error, I make to do list daily, affirmations, positive mindset, being kind to myself and others, staying positive and making sure you have support when needed. I have learned so much along the way. One of the main things I learned is use what you have until you get what you want. Do not compare your business to others and stay consistent no matter what. You may not have the big machines or the latest inventory but use what you have. If you show initiative the blessings will come. Someone else’s business is someone else’s ground work, story and path. Stay focused on your journey and you will go far. Consistency is key and if you stay consistent, it will pay off. I would like the world to know that Majestic Beauty By Nene is all about self love, loving the skin you’re in, we support inner work, body positivity and women empowerment. We will be launching our YouTube channel very soon to start really assisting those on the path t self love.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming to visit from my hometown of Rochester, New York, I would definitely take her to Slutty Vegan. I am a pescatarian transitioning to vegan lifestyle and she loves meat!! HAHA! I keep telling her that vegan food can be tasty too so I would take her to get a burger and fries, the vegan way! After eating, we would go for some retail therapy and shop at Lenox Mall to enjoy one another’s company. As a night cap, I do have to say I host the best game night/dinner parties ever. I would invite family & friends/other like minded individuals and play some good music, grill, play games and laugh. I am all about good vibes with good people. I’m sure she would appreciate it because this is what we did a lot of back in NY.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother deserves all of the credit I have to give!! Not just for bringing me into this world, but for TRULY believing in me in everything that I do. I was always artistically expressive even as a child, rather that be music, art, dance, cosmetology or fashion and my mother was sure to support it. Every single milestone whether big or small, she never missed it. She has been my biggest supporter and also my biggest drive to make it big so that I can take care of her the way she has done for me. I remember as a child, wearing a scarf from her closet and I would go into the bathroom and make it into a shirt 10 different ways. Each time I came out with the scarf tied into a different style, she would light up and tell me how creative and talented I was. I always felt like a trophy for my mother as she would always show me off to friends and family. I could never doubt if she believed in me and never had to guess if she was proud of me or not. Now that I am an adult, she still tells me everyday how much she thinks of me. If I did not have her as a mother, I would have had to find my confidence in other ways. Thank God I will never have to wonder what that would have been like because I have her as a mom.
