We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Adeoye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, what principle do you value most?
The value that matters to me the most is something I had to learn on my own; which is to always feel uncomfortable.

When you get too comfortable, you begin to move with complacency, which in some cases does more harm than good. When you operate in an uncomfortable space, you either learn or you’re either forced to grow because your natural reaction is get back to a place of comfort.

Yes, it’s a never ending cycle, and I wouldn’t say this works for everyone, but it works for those who look to grow and get better which every passing day. So in a sense, I enjoy the struggle, because it makes me a stronger and better individual.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the Founder and President of a non-profit organization called, Genuine Happiness, which exists to lighten the burdens of others through charitable acts of service that aim to promote and nurture mental health, physical well-being, and access to a better quality of life.

What sparked the creation of Genuine Happiness? It was my own personal battle with mental health, primarily depression back in 2017. During that time, I had to think to myself, what will it take to restore my joy and it ended up being something that always came natural to me; the ability to make those around me happy. Seeing people happy is what brings me happiness and joy 99.9% of the time; which is how I coined the term Genuine Happiness, because the joy I feel and create is always Genuine.

Genuine Happiness started as a small community service project in 2017 that primarily targeted the underserved population of Washington D.C.. Every year following on Christmas Day, this project has served the population through various acts of service starting with a simple coat drive. Our following has grown so much since 2017 and in 2021, we became a 501(c)(3) which allowed us to become charitable and have a greater impact. Ever since we have repurposed ourselves to expand our scope and mission, while raising awareness on mental health, physical well-being and overall quality of life through our acts of service.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A few spots that I would take my best friend to would be as followed:

Ace Atlanta on a Friday night, which is one of my favorite spots to be when I decide to leave the house on Friday, because of the great selection of afrobeats. On another day, for good vibes in general, with music and food, depending on what my friend is looking for, I’d take him to Pasha, Xperience or U Bar, which are 3 different types of vibes.

Places in general to have fun and see, i’d say Revery bar, Ponce city, Painted Pin, Botanical gardens, the Battery and probably one of the museums, that I have yet to see myself.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my sister, Juliannah Adeoye. I honestly don’t know how successful I’d be in life without the opportunity to walk in her footsteps and learn to pave my own way and definition of success.

Long story short, my sister and I are somewhat direct opposites in a way, growing up she bought home the 4.0s and I delivered the 2.0s on a gold platter to my parents. She was the golden child and I was just the bad child, and consciously I didn’t care but subconsciously I always wanted to a better person. Watching her drive and success every passing day made me move from a subconscious to a conscious state of “I want to and have to do better” and make those around me proud.

I’d also add, that my sister and I till this day have never been at competition, we have a healthy relationship, where we both just want the best for each other and our 3 younger siblings and I think that’s what will forever drive us, as they also seem to mimic our definition of success.
