We had the good fortune of connecting with Martha Christine Amongin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martha Christine, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Uganda, specifically from the Teso tribe in the Eastern region of Uganda. I was raised by both my mother and father with quite a lot of values and principles that were mainly enforced by my mother. She has always told us to work hard for whatever we want in life because it will take you further. She has also always been quite a strong believer of not just giving us whatever we want but instead showing us that we must work hard for it. That principle is one of the greatest contributors to who I am today. I do not just wait to be handed anything, I work hard and smart to get to each level that I reach in life. My brand is what it is today because I do not just sit around and wait for someone or some people to come and make things happen but instead I go out of my way to make progress. I work hard, stay determined, focused and most of all make sacrifices. All these are principles that I have been raised by.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is an African print business called Kris Amo. We deal in Afrocentric pieces such as clothing and accessories. We mainly focus on African print fabrics that we manipulate to create beautiful clothes, bags, jewelry and so on.
I am extremely proud of how far I have come so far with the brand. I started it when I was just 18 years back in high school and now at 22 years of age I must say I have come a long way. The business is 5 years old and I’m extremely proud of the sacrifice and hard work that has brought it to this point.
I got to where I am today business wise due to the principles such as hard work, sacrifice, focus, determination, and resilience. Traits that I incorporate in my daily work activities to ensure that we move forward.
It wasn’t easy at all, especially coming from a point where I had to manage and run the business all by myself. I was working as the social media handler, manager, director, delivery person, model, creative designer, I was making the jewelry by myself and generally doing everything on my own.
I also faced challenges working with clients at a point.
However I was able to overcome all the challenges by outsourcing some work to other people to lighten the load, I also came up with some strategies to help the business to thrive and serve my clients better. I also intensified research on most of my work, got more creative and with time it got a bit easier.
I have learnt that you can’t get to where you want to be without working twice as hard and smart.
In the 21st century you have to be creative and ensure to do things that will make you stand out from the crowd.
I want the world to get ready for this brand, we haven’t yet gotten to nearly half of where we want to be, but when we do, you should be ready for us.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom is the first and most important person I’d love to shout out to. The Genesis of who I am and what I do is because of all her efforts to ensure that I am who I am today. I would not be at this point in life if not for her and my dad.
My dad and my family as well play such an important role because they’re such a huge support system for me with all the love, care and mentorship.
The role my friends have played in building my brand and who I am today is one that I can never ignore. They have been apart of every step of this brand from the get go to where it is today. They have showed me love, support and gone out of their way to see me to the point at which I am today.
