We had the good fortune of connecting with Godson Michel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Godson, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
That you need a college degree, mentors, or even a loan to start a business.

I’ve launched two successful brands without either just by bootstrapping, and a lot of YouTube university. Sure, those three things can make the process easier, but if you’re a kid coming up without access to those privileges, it helps to know that there are people out there doing and building amazing things through sheer perseverance and creativity.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Blue Surge Marketing Agency is the brainchild of my first business, KickBackz. a sprawling sneaker empire that reached over $1 million in sales in a few short years and had customers in over 30 countries. Unfortunately, I was pretty young and inexperienced when I founded KickBackz, so it didn’t last as long as it could’ve. Once I saw sales were tapering off, I slowly realized I could take the digital marketing skills I used to build that first business and start a new company. I’ve been growing Blue Surge a lot more slower and methodically than KickBackz. It’s been fun learning from my previous mistakes but sooo worth it. It’s still early, but I’m proud to have worked with some amazing organizations the past few years. We’ve have already received multiple awards and recognition from the marketing campaigns and websites my agency has created, so that’s a W. It’s still a growing process, but I’m excited to see how we take it even further this year.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live on Long Island but spend most of my leisure time in Manhattan and Brooklyn. There’s way too much to do, but I’d take them to Smorgasburg at Prospect Park in Brooklyn for some exotic food. For sightseeing, a stop at Hudson Yards and a trip to the Museum of Natural History is always a go. At night, we’d hit up some of my favorite clubs, like Taj II or Rooftop 760.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout Robert Kiyosaki’s best selling book. Rich Dad, Poor Dad! It was probably the first book I ever read in the self-development space and really flipped how I viewed money as a tool to get a head. I was a newbie business owner when I picked it up, so being able to learn about the importance of assets versus liabilities really helped me hit my stride. I still pick it up and re-read it at least once a year.
