We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk is essential to growth. You cannot be afraid of failing if you want to achieve any kind of success. I’m an analytical person by nature and can obsess over an idea, a decision to be made, or a direction to take…but the freedom comes in taking the leap. It is both exhilarating and terrifying but that is what keeps things exciting and the more you take those leaps, the more you learn to trust yourself. As with anything in life, you cannot get stuck in the success or failure of an endeavor, you have to learn the lesson of the experience and move on to the next thing.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mare Modern Goods is a destination for modern equestrian design. Our products feature original artwork and patterns with bold, bright colors inspired by horses and riders in the equestrian community. I’ve been in business for three years and manage every aspect of the business. There have been a lot of things I’ve had to learn and I’ve had to to ask for help when I need it but I’m a natural problem solver so I’m not one to shy away from a challenge. I wouldn’t say the process has been easy but it has been awesome! The first years of owning a business are like growing a garden…you spend a lot of time getting the soil right, making sure you’ve got quality seeds and the right conditions for your seed to grow. You can’t walk away and you’ve got to keep watering and making sure you take care of that seedling before you can even think about seeing growth. It takes patience, persistence, getting up and getting out there even when it seems like nothing is happening. People want overnight success but that’s rarely how it works. Building something that matters takes time and you need time to really figure out what you’re doing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta has so many interesting place to visit; The MLK memorial and Ebenezer Baptist Church is always a powerful experience as well as checking out the The National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Venkmans in the Old Fourth Ward is a wonderful place for local music, and we have so many amazing restaurants! Whiskey Bird or La Tavola in the Virginia Highlands, Sushi at MF in Inman Park, Mexican at Bar Taco.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jen Sincero, Author of You are a Badass and many other awesome books https://jensincero.com –her books helped me get into the right mindset as I started my business…I still listen to them when I need a little encouragement.
