We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Barnett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
The whole process of starting my business was one giant risk. As a completely self-funded venture, I was all in and all or nothing. While I am extremely organized and pragmatic, I am not afraid of a risk. The best advice I’ve been given, and words I repeat to myself at least once a day, is to trust your gut. Even if something feels like a risk, if your intuition is urging you on, you will seldom be disappointed.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My parents were actually interior designers and architects and my eye has always been drawn to that world. After a few years in corporate America after an undergraduate degree in the humanities, I woke up one day physically unable to go into my office and said, “I gotta work for myself, I gotta give this a shot.” While I feel like it was percolating in the back of my mind for years before I actually set out to start my interior design business, the inception of it and the official incorporation of the whole shebang happened relatively quickly. My drive to capitalize on the excitement I had propelled me through the first few difficult months (which also coincided with March of 2020 – not exactly the best time, in theory, to start a business) and I was working with clients before I knew it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all, I love planning so our agenda would be jam packed and revolve around Atlanta’s never ending array of amazing restaurants. We’d eat at The Optimist as well as drinks downstairs at BeetleCat, do a little drinking tour of East Atlanta, head to the Three Taverns Imaginarium and then definitely head to Decatur (where I was raised) to The Brick Store Pub. I always love checking out what’s at The High so I would incorporate a little art intake one day before heading out to dance at MJQ and take in some of the unforgettable sights at The Clermont.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My support system! Without my sister and my girl friends, SB Home ATL would not have happened. The unwavering support, advice and constructive criticism has been the bedrock of my efforts.
