We had the good fortune of connecting with Messiah Marcial and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Messiah, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe that beauty should be attainable for the everyday woman and not reserved for a particular “type” of woman. I feel that beauty is reserved for all women who choose to dismantle the narrative that it (beauty) only comes in the form of influencers, celebrities, or extremely wealthy women who can pay an exorbitant amount of money to look a certain way. For me, true magic happens when I can help a woman reaffirm herself as beautiful, strong, and powerful. It doesn’t matter to me whether that confidence shows up in the form of a new haircut, hair color or makeup application. Everyone should be made to feel beautiful. In a practical sense, I’ve learned to surround myself with the right team of professionals who allow me to be “the creative” while offering their expertise and constructive criticism. I thrive from the synergy that comes from having like-minded individuals in my circle and it allows me to stay focused on my vision. “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.” That is knowledge to live by!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been a part of the beauty industry for nearly 20 years. In this ever-changing field of work it can be challenging to find your place. Another thing I found challenging was placing the proper value on something that I loved and would do for free. I’m proud to say that after all this time, “I’m still here!” It’s been a constant climb towards defining my success. My journey may not have been easy but I stuck with it. I hired a business coach who has been teaching me to realign my focus and turn my hobby into a thriving business. When I’m not servicing my celebrity clientele or busy on the set of a photoshoot, my focus is on providing intimate one-on-one services to women in my salon studio. The goal is to provide a luxury experience and allow my clients to have their downtime. My specialties Include haircuts, hair color and makeup application. I’m looking to expand my services by curating makeup events where women can enjoy themselves while getting ready for a special event or engagement.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Atlanta makes it easy to entertain. There are so many great restaurants and there are always events going on in the city. Recently, I have become obsessed with food halls. The Works at Chattahoochee, Politan Row at Colony Square and Ponce City Market each have their own vibe and would be on the short- list of places to eat. I would also make sure to do dinner at Negril Village. Of course, we would have to do at least one soul-food restaurant so we would make a stop at Paschal’s. By no means am I a golfer, but I love Topgolf for the fun atmosphere and the drinks are great! For a little culture, I would definitely make it a point to check out The King Center or The National Civil Rights Museum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is for the countless professionals who serve as the pulse of the industry. These are the hairstylists, the makeup professionals and the photographers who have learned to navigate the ebbs and flow of entrepreneurship and more specifically the beauty industry. There is one person that I owe a debt of gratitude, and that is Kay Simpson Bethea. I worked as her assistant early in my career and not only did she engraft those important entrepreneur presets like work-life balance and focusing on my area of expertise, but she also taught styling techniques. She nurtured my individuality and gave me a safe place to make mistakes while I was on a learning curve. To this day I still lean on Kay for guidance on certain things and she is still my point of reference on how to run a successful business.

Of course I could never forget a huge shout out to my “Run the World Girls” who keep my business going and inspire me to do what I do every day.
