We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber D. Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I actually accidentally stumbled upon this passion/talent.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a creator, I love to create, I love making the unseen seen, I love creating things that make people feel special, unique, and happy. I chose this career on accident, it’s a long story but the gist is that I’m here by God’s Destiny and purpose for my life.

It has been a very rocky journey for me. I’ve struggled with full-time (outside) employment which funded and sometimes my business. It takes a lot of money to cover your inventory when sewing. It’s an “invest in it and then it will produce” type career which is hard to maintain if your cash flow from it is low or if you don’t have access to money outside of it. Even through my dry seasons, someone somewhere supported me in my brand, which helped me.

I have a huge heart for people. In business and outside of business. I pour more into my work than anyone could know. I enjoy bringing a smile to my client’s faces. Every sacrifice that I made this far was so that The Amber D. Brown Collections could thrive. My vision for it exceeds the boundaries of custom garments. I aspire to touch lives. My motto is “Made by Hand, Designed with Heart.” To me, every single stitch counts.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Jack Brown, located in Lakeview. Their burgers are amazing, and the atmosphere is infectious. Although, they don’t sell libations it’s a great spot to have a bite and trap conversations. I would also take them to Prodigy Events and Promotions aka PEPS. There’s always something going on there, whether it’s a karaoke night or brunch with a live band and artists. It’s a black owned family business.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people have spoken into me, sowed seeds of all sorts and even have physically invested into my projects. I won’t say any names because I know I forget someone. I’m thankful for you, you know who you are.

I want to give a shoutout to my parents, they have both encouraged me to stick with my dreams. Especially my dad AJ, in college when I wanted to drop my Biology Pre-Med major, he told me his life story. None of my parents graduate from college. But my dad pushed me to follow my heart in whatever direction it took me. He told me to find something that was fulfilling. Something that I could do everyday without pay and my heart would still be full of joy.

And that’s exactly what I did with tears in my eyes while I scrolled though The University of Alabama’s degree catalog to find a major that made sense to my heart. Now, I’m a first generation college graduate with my degree in Apparel and Textiles concentration in Design. That one conversation changed my life. So whether I was unemployed and I was a full time Designer or employed and a part time Designer… my career choice just sticks. Even in my sleepless nights their prayers and encouraging words have stuck with me. I’m grateful for them both.
