We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika Tabb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamika, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had my daughter at 15 and that brought on many challenges, the biggest one being the financial burden of being a child, raising a child. I battled with making wise spending choices and oftentimes found myself living paycheck to paycheck, even with a college degree! At that point I realized, it doesn’t matter how much I make, I will always feel “broke” if my money wasn’t managed properly. As my career flourished and I met more people in the Accounting industry, I soon realized that not only was proper money management important, but the ability to have multiple streams of income was key.
At the end of 2019, I attended a “Secure The Bag in 2020” wealth party hosted by a friend in the Accounting Industry. I have always worked in a corporate environment fulfilling the missions of large corporations, but attending her party helped me redefine my goals. My vision was to find a way to connect with women of color, who had faced some of the same challenges I had and could benefit from becoming more financially savvy. This wealth party led to the creation of Her Crown Accounting in January 2020.
Believe it or not, I found balance as a young mom by creating multiple streams of income and taking more accountability over my finances. That became the vision for Her Crown Accounting & Business Solutions, LLC, creating a financial-based brand that would help other women find this freedom.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a young working mom, I found myself living paycheck to paycheck for a very long time. To some it may of seemed like I had it all together, because I “looked” the part, but behind closed doors, I was struggling and this was after graduating from college.
Let me paint the picture, my daughter’s father was not financially supportive and she was becoming very active in basketball in her high school years. This meant in addition to paying mortgage and utilities, gas and car maintenance, food…you know all of those things, I had to figure out how I was going to pay for AAU fees and tournaments over the next four years.
So as I grew in my Accounting career, I started building new relationships and learning more positive financial habits from various individuals in my career journey. In addition to becoming more financially savvy, I experienced a shift in my mindset. Things started happening and suddenly I went from paycheck to paycheck to OVERFLOW! See I learned something very important along the way. I learned the importance of having an abundance mindset, regardless of my past circumstances. In addition to prayer, I started to affirm what I wanted and desired, and the shift happened. See, when you take control of your life, whether its related to money or a relationship…when you decide you deserve more and you are willing to work for it, you will leave the mess and create success!
For some in the African American community, we have sub-consciously been taught to work harder for someone else than we are willing to work for ourselves. We have been cultured to believe that we do not have the ability to create wealth in our families because we were never taught how to in our childhood. We were modeled as strong black women empowered to be the bearer of all hats, even if we lost ourselves along the way. I figured, it was time to change the narrative!
I have always worked in a corporate environment fulfilling the missions of large corporations, but I wanted to find a way to connect with women like me, who adhered to some of the same challenges I faced. That is what my business is all about, I help women redefine their relationship with money to strategically produce more income through various tailored techniques.
I call myself the homegirl who understands the assignment on how to collect the bags and keep them for generations to come. I never want to seem like the Accountant that you half way understand, I value the ability to build personal relationships with my clients. See when my client wins. I win….its a family thing and you cant get this energy anywhere!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a foodie!!
When in Atlanta, there’s a few food spots you have to try (and they are black owned):
Breakfast/Brunch: Two Eggs Restaurant (McDonough, GA) or Le Petit Marché (Decatur, GA)
Lunch: Fin & Feathers (Atlanta, GA) Dave’s Cheesesteaks (Atlanta, GA) or This Is It (any location)
Dinner: BQE (Atlanta, GA), Roc South (Atlanta, GA), Ms. Icey’s (Decatur, GA)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe God places angels in your life and one of those angels that I am extremely grateful for is Miss Kimberly Summerlin (aka Kim)! Kim and I connected when I first moved to Georgia from Virginia in 2011. I happened to get my makeup done one day and let the MUA know that I was looking for a hair stylist, she referred her sister, Kim. To this day, I am still a client (and friend) that sits in her chair. Our bond started off as just a client relationship, but that relationship has sprouted into a sisterhood, where we both pour into each other. That is extremely important and hard to find.
