We had the good fortune of connecting with Funmi Ford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Funmi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success has to be my relationships with my audience. When I first started I wanted to be friends with everyone I came in contact with virtually. They have been some of my biggest supporters and friends. Even now, I answer all my messages, reply back to my comments and periodically reach out to them just to check in. Building a great relationship with your audience is key to building a great brand.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others has to be my tenacity and desire to help others. I started my brand to help women of all shapes and budget level love themselves and feel confident in what they are wearing. It was not easy to get where I am, it’s still not easy. Entrepreneurship is a daily battle and you have to decide every day to keep going even when you’re not seeing the results from your hard work. I overcome the hardships by remembering my why! I started my brand to help others. Knowing my why and knowing that I’m helping other build confidence keeps me going and I’m passionate about my craft and the brands I work with yearly.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that comparison is the thief of joy. As an entrepreneur and especially as a creative, you will come to the point where others are doing better than you, don’t focus on that. Focus on your end goal and your why. This has been the lesson that’s helped me and I pass it along.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love hosting my friends when they come to Birmingham. We live in a small town but it’s a lot of fun. -Shopping has to be top of the list as I’m a stylist and fashion creator.
-Helens is one of my favorite restaurants in my city so we would definitely plan a date there
-I love our museum here in Birmingham so we would plan a day trip to our local History museum.
-of course some nightlife at some of our local breweries and lounges
-And a quick trip to Atlanta for a spa day and some Nigerian food

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this to my amazing husband and two kids. When I decided to go fully into this, he didn’t flinch, he encouraged me to go for it. He’s my biggest supporter.
