We had the good fortune of connecting with Memy Baxter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Memy, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
This a really tough question because I battle with if I want to keep going or give up. Being in the hair industry, if you are not know; it’s hard to get clientele. I feel like your appearance is everything. I don’t wear 30 inch wigs, Jordan’s, flying eye lashes or have long nails. I’m not a really known person so promoting my business sometimes can be very difficult. It’s just like another business where you have high and low peaks. I’ve made $2000 within the last 30 days. I keep track using square. I do have some loyal customers who come back but I still wish I had more clients. I wash and condition every client (unless they decline being wash) before any style. You would think people would appreciate it because most stylish ask that you already be wash , free from oils, etc., but sometimes it can take longer on a style and most clients get mad about that. Running your own business, you have so many doubts, but what God has for me , it’s for me. So I’m going to keep pushing! Eventually I’m going to go from over look to over book.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m the owner of Memy Creations braids and more. I begin to braid at the age of 6. At first, I looked at doing hair as a way to get fast money. As I got older, I realize it’s more than to just braiding hair. What type of shampoo would you use for a 4C type hair. If a customer wants a particular style but having loss hair; what are you going to do to achieve this look? I’ve made so many trials and error. Some criticism was good and some was bad. You literally have to practice to make perfect. I remember asking people to be my model for a particular hairstyle. I would not charge them the full price everything would be half off/discounted. People would agree but the day of would not show up. In my head, am I just that horrible as a stylist? What am I doing wrong? The minute I accomplish a style, every body going to want to come to me then and want a discount. I remember allowing close friends and family to come get their hair done but if they did not have the money; they could pay me at a later time. It’s crazy because they would go to other people and pay them same day or what’s worse, I had people to run off and not pay me for my work. This really made me feel like I should just give up. I have a strict policy now. No one can pay me later. No deposit, No appointment! If appointment time is still available, and client still show up with deposit, you will pay me additional $25 plus the cost of the hair style up front before I start. It’s hard. People love to get over on you. You have to be strict and just know you cannot satisfy every one. Sometimes you going to lose money and you have to be okay with that. For example, they want hand twist Locs, you provide the hair and they want it down to they butt but only want to pay $100 for it. I am very passionate about doing hair. It’s more than just doing hair. My goal is to treat and grow your hair. I love what I do. It’s not about money because you can get that any where. But I won’t belittle myself or my prices to accommodate every one.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest, Montgomery is really boring. Montgomery is just a place when your life is already set and you don’t want to travel you just at peace with life. Honestly, we better off just throwing a kick back at my place turning up. I have more fun partying at home with family and friends then actually going out. People really don’t know how to act these days. Nothing is fun any more. Kids are not kids these days.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to give praise to the most high which is God. He’s my beginning and my end. Without him, I am nothing or have nothing at all. God bless me with a passion to do hair at the age of 6. I was in summer camp doing people hair making money. I remember when I was at Putnam Middle School this girl name Bunnie ask me to braid her hair and I put the letter B in the middle of her head. If it wasn’t for God showing me my talents, where would I really be?

Second, I like to shout my husband. He’s been nothing but amazing and supportive. His criticism, at first, made me feel as if he didn’t care about my hair business and he was talking down on me. Weird right? Every time I did his hair , he complain about something and it started to discourage me. Once I started to look at him as my client and not my husband whenever I’m doing his hair, his experiment was better. I listen to him and took his feed back as my client, not my husband. Some techniques he taught me I used on my other clients and I saw it actually works.

Third, I would like to shout out my sister in love. I truly love her. She’s from Germany. She texted me one day in the middle of the night and said hey, your social media for your business page is very unprofessional and honestly looking at your page, I wouldn’t want to book with you. How would you feel if I revamp your business change. In my head, I’m like dang, is it really just that bad. She gave me so many insight and feed backs on how I should take my clients pictures. She even went above and beyond to go on Amazon and send me links for things I should purchase. She’s been a huge blessing to my business. I saw my business go from 5 likes to almost 600 likes over the pass month. Branding your business is really key.
