We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominek Tubbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominek, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
During the day, I am a people manager for a tech company, and DNTC (Dom N’ The City) has been a creative outlet for me. Growing up, I never considered myself artistic or creative until I picked up a camera a couple of years ago. I love having the ability to create imagery that will stop people in their tracks and say, “Whoa, where is this food from?” and driving business to restaurant or brand I patronize.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started Dom N’ The City in December of 2017, but previous to that, I was blogging for a friend’s site before deciding to strike out on my own. I created the platform to share my dining gems in NYC, but I realized that many digital publications in NYC did not include Black-owned businesses in these listicles. From that point, I made it my mission to amplify these businesses with my social platforms through photography.

What sets me apart from other social media accounts or content creators is my ability to show up as myself in a relatable fashion authentically. Many of my supporters (I hate the term “follower”) tell me I am their bestie in their heads. I also enjoy educating my social media fam regarding dining out, products, and blogging tips. I like to make things approachable.

I have consistently juggled content creation/blogging while working my 9-5 in the tech space. Starting Dom N’ The City was not easy because I had to truly master the art of time management, batching content, honing my photography skills, and automating specific tasks. What I learned along the way is you truly have to invest in yourself and not just in a monetary sense but in the sense of time. You have to be willing to sacrifice a weekend to learn a new skill or perfect a current one.

My tagline for Dom N’ The City is “Somewhere buying Black, shopping local, or in the kitchen.”
