We had the good fortune of connecting with Palm Piraban and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Palm, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Greetings, I’m Palm Piraban, and I am working as a CG Generalist at FuseFX, an award-winning Visual Effects Studio based in New York City, a role I’ve held since graduating with an M.A. in Visual Effects from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2022. From a young age, I’ve been a passionate fan of animation and movies such as Pixar’s Toy Story (1995), and I was always curious about how they were made. My journey into this captivating CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) career began early in high school when a classmate introduced me to 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya. I was astounded to discover that 3D software allowed me to view creations from any angle and easily undo any mistakes I made on the computer in 2006! This later inspired me to pursue a degree in animation at Chiang Mai University, Thailand. After I graduated in 2012, I worked for local animation studios producing animated TV series, focusing on lighting and look development for 7 years.
Both animation and visual effects have always captivated me through their ability to tell stories visually. I enjoy working with 3D lighting, shading, color, and creating CGI assets and scenes. These elements play an essential role in conveying narratives and establishing the overall aesthetic of projects. It allows me to explore new techniques, push the boundaries of creativity, and contribute to the enchantment of audiences. I am truly passionate about my craft, and I eagerly anticipate further growth and success in my artistic career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Even though I am in the artistic and creative industries, my drawing and painting skills were average. During my studies at College of Art, Media and Technology, I struggled in drawing and painting classes, resulting in average scores during my freshman and sophomore years. However, in 2010, everything changed during my junior year when I enrolled in a 3D animation class, and I discovered a newfound passion and talent for CGI. The world of 3D animation ignited my creativity and opened up a whole new realm of artistic possibilities. From that point on, my journey in art took a positive trajectory, and I felt that I had found my calling.
However, it was not easy. CGI is a whole new world, with a multitude of steps before diving into the 3D process. Creating good CGI requires attention to various elements, such as design, modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering, and compositing. While I possessed a range of techniques, my work didn’t always have the aesthetic appeal. To improve, I devoted myself to reading and watching tutorials to learn more about the technical aspects rather than just focusing on artistic elements. I embraced the idea of blending all the techniques I learned and adapting them into my work, akin to a scientist conducting experiments.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I visited the famous “World of Coca-Cola” museum in Atlanta while visiting a friend. We parked nearby and walked to the museum, which was bustling with visitors. It was my first time exploring the inner workings of Coca-Cola’s creation. The highlight was the Coca-Cola Beverage Tasting Experience, where I sampled numerous flavors, including the popular “Fanta” from Thailand. The museum visit left me with a newfound appreciation for the brand’s history and global impact. It was a short but memorable experience that left a lasting impression.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I am deeply grateful to my family, including my parents and cousins, for placing their trust in me and providing unwavering support throughout my journey. Their invaluable guidance and assistance in areas such as physical, mental, and financial aspects have been instrumental during my studies in both Thailand and the USA.
Furthermore, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to my mentors, Tachapon Lertwirojkul, Wanida Lertwech. They have each played a significant role in shaping my growth as a lighting artist. Tachapon and Wanida patiently guided me when I was a newcomer to the field, sharing their expertise and helping me develop my skills. Professor Konlaway Klaynak and Professor Nop Kongdee, from Chiang Mai University, provided invaluable guidance and support throughout my academic journey, encouraging me to reach new heights in my craft.
In addition, I would like to extend a special thank you to my friends, Marisa “Ginger” Tontaveetong and Thanawat “Seng” Kantrum. They have been instrumental in guiding me in my career, offering valuable insights and support. Their friendship and counsel have been invaluable in helping me navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that have come my way.
I am truly thankful for the unwavering belief, encouragement, and assistance I have received from my family, mentors, professors, and friends. Their contributions have shaped my journey, fostered my growth, and played a significant role in my achievements.
