We had the good fortune of connecting with Omer Abbasi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Omer, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
The American Dream: HisStory in the Making by David Windecher This book is a gripping story on the life of a criminal turned criminal defense attorney – David Windecher. A true story with rich characters and showcasing what hard-work and perseverance can achieve. It reminds me in parts of my own struggles and more so than that, the struggle that I have seen my parents, mentors and real-life inspirations go through. Witnessing the trouncing of struggle is a feeling which everyone can appreciate. Who does not love a good underdog rising story!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My life as a child or adolescent VS now are poles apart. I had a silver spoon in my mouth in Dubai along with more friends than I could count till the end of college. Never worried about money, never had any problems. As far as youths are concerned – I had it perfect! Fast forward to 10 months after graduation. I got married, and a short 12-months after I moved across continents to Atlanta, GA. Now as spoiled and lucky as I was – I was not going to take handouts. I came here with some money but very quickly that turned into no money. My wife and I were both working and barely made ends meet. End of every month we would pray that our bank balance would not overdraw because that meant a $25 fee. It was that, coupled with knowing practically no one here. I am a social person by nature but did not have a social circle as we never had time. I would work my ass of at my job to ensure that I made money through commissions. Outside of that I was willing to do odd-jobs like food delivery for a little extra cash. Going to Red Lobster was our idea of a great night out. Looking back now. I thankfully have a great network of colleagues and friends. We are healthy and now, at a place in life where we have actually managed to travel, see more of the country and parts of the world which is a big step away from worrying about what we would eat on the last day before payday! We are blessed through God first and through the hard work my wife has put in. She has gone from being a “representative” in her first job to now being an Associate Director at a firm mentioned in Times magazine! I have gone from not having a job to being a Sales Director in a Fortune 100 company! Together – I am sure we can accomplish all goals in life! For now – our 2 year old, Amber and I are truly blessed and always looking forward to our next adventure!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well as a huge foodie food needs to be discussed first! Umi’s Sushi in Buckhead for an awesome menu and nothing on the menu which you can go wrong with Oceanaire Seafod Room in Midtown for fresh, high-quality seafood Il Giallo Sandy Springs for the best Italian I have ever had, including Italy! Rumi’s Kitchen in Sandy Springs for authentic Persian food Outside of that I am a fan of the classics. Take them to CNN HQ, Coke Museum, the aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park. For the outdoorsy friends there is always Amicalola Falls, drive to Helen GA for the German-town experience!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Drew Niess – Allstate Insurance Agent Drew built his business from the ground up with no support. Drew worked tirelessly to grow it but more than that – he gave me a chance when not a lot of people would. New to the county, no US work experience. Just a kid with a can-do attitude who he interviewed once. Since then we have worked together. I may have been an employee but he made me a partner in the business. Together, we have always managed to do everything to put our clients first and help them out. From vicious claims which other agents would not even get involved in to taking calls on Christmas because disaster can strike anytime and when it comes to protecting peoples assets and investments – we want to be there 24/7! Drew’s office is at 3133 Maple Drive, Atlanta – 30305. Heart of Buckhead for a visit or you can call in at 404-477-5500. Email if you prefer is dniess@allstate.com
