We had the good fortune of connecting with Khadijah Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khadijah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Being a native to Atlanta, I am surrounded by so many other creatives and I believe this city is somewhere entrepreneurs thrive. The women and men in Atlanta have dominated the beauty industry, which made me think about what I could contribute to the artistic and creative scene myself. I have always been a fan of fragrances; perfumes, incenses, candles, air sprays, wax melts, etc. Herb Season Scents is heavily based on providing peace, calmness and stress-relief (aromatherapy). I like to keep my life aligned with those traits which is why I wanted to create the same experience. The inspiration behind naming my candles and other fragrances off of cannabis strains is because cannabis can also be associated with reducing anxiety and relaxation. It also keeps the brand fun, as each fragrance name gives anticipation to its unique aroma.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Herb Season Scents came about because I knew there was more to me. I’ve always wanted to invent/create something that others could enjoy. I believe my attitude and mindset is what makes me yearn for entrepreneurship. When I was younger, I worked at a popular night club throughout college as their head bartender. The temptation at such a young age was intense, but the way I handled my work was always with ease, grace, and a smile. I was able to master that job and my schooling and I realized that structure is what kept pushing me forward. After I graduated and left the bar, the structure of my life was different. I was unorganized, unmotivated, and I knew I was not living up to my potential. I had got comfortable. I knew I wanted to get back to running something, but that was truly my own. Now that I see the progress my business has made just from my continuous effort, I am more motivated than ever to keep pushing forward. I knew that if I wanted to succeed it was all up to me. At the beginning, I made things hard for myself because I didn’t want to put in the work; but when I remember the structure that consistent work provides me, I knew my brand would only be what I made of it. I have learned that as long as I keep progressing: making new products and being a creative, I will prosper. It’s no secret, hard work and determination are surely what move us forward. Like me, sometimes we lose sight of that, but no matter what we do to be our best self we must want it and put forth the effort.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I enjoy outdoors. I like parks, trails, hiking, etc. To provide them with the best trip, I would want to take them to some refreshing spots. There is a bike trail not too far from me, accompanied by some great American restaurants. The next couple of days we would visit various parks and hiking and running trails. One of my favorite things to eat is seafood, especially sushi so we would visit a few of my favorite sushi spots. Closer to the end of the trip, we could go check out some vending events where thy could purchase some exclusive items in my city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mother, sister, and boyfriend. These are the three people that valued my idea and gave me the motivation to move forward with my brand. Also many of my close friends deserve credit for where I am today. Before I knew how to market my brand, I had friends assist me that were already familiar with marketing. Along with that, I was surprised at how much local support I received. I knew people would be supportive of my business venture, because fragrances are popular overall, but I never expected certain people to support at all. I am grateful that I had a support system behind me cheering me on from the beginning all the way up to now.
