We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahnova Kamil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jahnova, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because I like for every aspect of my life to be creative, including business. I enjoy having the liberty to produce as much as I like to on my own time. Being able to create my own schedule and disciplining myself to stick to said schedule is rewarding. I love meeting people from different walks of life and bringing their vision to reality. Being an artist is fun, challenging and communal; all qualities of life that are meaningful to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a tattoo artist and a fine artist which, in many ways, goes hand and hand. Certain times in life I focus more on tattoos, other times I’m painting and drawing more. I find peace in creating art using my hands. I’m really proud of selling paintings around the globe and traveling to tattoo in different countries, I wouldn’t have imagined all of these things when I first started creating professionally. I got to where I am today by doing consistent work and making connections. Networking is very important in this industry. The journey has not been easy. I’ve overcome challenges by reaching out to friends and mentors for support. I’ve learned to not be so hard on myself and not to attach monetary value to art all the time. I’m the first person in my family to own a business and to take on art professionally; one day I would love to own a building for artists to create and connect.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One spot I always take my friends to when they visit the city is Monday Night Brewery! I love all of the beer options and the building is beautiful. I would take a friend to walk down The Beltline, on a picnic at Piedmont Park and to check out the High Art Museum. There are so many beautiful gems in Atlanta it’s hard to name them all! The Botanical Gardens are also a unique place to visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to Miya Bailey and his unique artist communal building, Peters Street Station. Miya inspired me by showing artists that we can be successful in more than one area of expertise. He helped me to understand that it takes a lot of work to be an artist and the world is our oyster. His encouragement and mentorship has cultivated a path for many amazing artists, young and old. Peters Street Station will always feel like a second home where I can go and create my hearts desires. Miya taught me and so many others that anything is possible.
