We had the good fortune of connecting with Frank Monroe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frank, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
You cannot expect others to outwork you in your pursuit of success. Until you forge those critical connections, you are responsible for putting in the effort necessary to achieve your dreams. I am on that journey. My first business, DreamzWurk Entertainment, allowed me to shine as the head artist. Although that venture faced challenges due to my lack of experience and missteps, I emerged from it wiser. My time in solitary confinement at Franklin County Jail in Tennessee was difficult, but it became a turning point for me that fueled my determination to succeed.

During my time in solitary confinement, I engaged in deep reflection. When I was released in early 2013, I had nowhere to go. My family had long since given up on me, and any promises of change were met with disbelief. I stayed briefly with my mother and a cousin, but I couldn’t accept the life they planned for me. I wanted more for myself and my future than they could understand.

A close acquaintance of mine, Herbert Fritch, who is the owner and chairman of the Nashville Predators in the NHL, extended a generous offer to help fund my college education. He expressed a genuine interest in supporting my academic journey, which I found both surprising and incredibly generous. There’s no need to go into detail about our relationship; just know that for someone like me, such an opportunity would not be wasted. I attended Full Sail University, where I studied Entertainment Business. During my studies, I developed the brand name Khing Jus Wurk (which stands for “King Just Work”). It means exactly what it sounds like: to work like a king and to get things done. Not only is it my name, but it also serves as a mantra for my life. I live by and firmly stand behind this title. I even took the step to register it as a trademark in 2014, which I now own solely.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am true to any art form I dedicate myself to. For me, it all started with poems. As I mentioned earlier, I was in Group Homes as a youth, and writing poems was something that taught us to do. It was very therapeutic. And a form of expression that came quickly to me. Also, my foster brother, who had passed away before me being there, was a rapper. So, I began writing music at an early age to express myself and share my experience with others. I began writing music when I was 12. I have been with a handful of indie labels, performed in many clubs, and hit the indie charts with a few big names. Dropped mixed tapes opened up for a few major acts. I hit my stride in 2019 and met with a few major labels. It just wasn’t meant to be for me. It’s not that I don’t have a passion for it. It’s not about a passion. One day, I will get back to the music, but it will be on terms of my own.

While attending Full Sail University in 2014, I began training in mixed martial arts at The Jungle MMA in Orlando. This experience marked the start of my journey in martial arts, unexpectedly opening doors to acting and stunt work. As I developed a particular look, I was invited to collaborate with fellow students to create and produce films. I thoroughly enjoyed these projects and was also booked for male modeling opportunities. As an artist, I received one or two awards for being a subject in a photographer’s project.

After graduating, I moved to Atlanta, hoping to connect with some fantastic industry professionals who could mentor me or offer opportunities. While it hasn’t entirely worked out that way yet, I’ve been proactive in finding my bookings, which has been a rewarding experience. As I always say, you have to put in the effort! Although I’m still looking for representation, I’m dedicated to hitting the gym several days a week to stay in shape and ready for whatever comes my way.

I’ve successfully provided security for several clients to support myself and enhance my brand here in Atlanta. Overall, my experiences have been enriching. I’ve worked on numerous significant productions and formed valuable connections with outstanding individuals. Furthermore, I’ve taken pride in teaching group self-defense classes and offering personal training to women who actively sought my expertise. It’s empowering to help those who once felt powerless realize their strength and confidence.

Although I have not yet reached the pinnacle of success that I know I will achieve one day, I won’t stop pursuing my greatness. I refuse to take shortcuts or harm others in my efforts to reach my goals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city might be a bit unusual because I prefer peace over large gatherings. One thing I’ve noticed and love about Atlanta is the abundance of large, beautiful parks that surround the city. It’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in a hike. Pack your bag, put on your headphones, and choose a trail. Most people are polite and greet you with a smile or a nod, which I appreciate.

After your hike, it’s time to relax at SweatHouz, which has several locations. While many are accustomed to expensive spas, SweatHouz keeps it simple and effective for recovery. They offer fantastic private saunas and ice baths, making it another great place to unwind while enjoying this vibrant city.

If you’re looking to grab a bite to eat without breaking the bank, Little Five Points is the place to go. This area is filled with restaurants where you can enjoy a reasonably priced meal. My top three spots are The Vortex Grill, Savage Pizza, and The Porter. Additionally, Little Five Points features clothing shops and the famous Criminal Records store.

Finally, if you can, experiencing a Hawks game from the courtside is a must. I did this once with my partner when she requested it for her baby shower. We were able to get a few courtside tickets to celebrate the upcoming arrival of our little one. They offered a fantastic buffet and would even bring the food to you if you wanted something that wasn’t readily available. Seriously, it felt like they had everything you could want! You also get to see many of the movers and shakers in the city; I think we spotted a few while there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I give all thanks to the Most High. While I may not be very religious, I am deeply spiritual and express gratitude for the force that binds us together. Next, I would like to thank Nessa, my college sweetheart and the mother of my child, who has supported me through challenging times. She and my child inspire me to be my best every day. I also want to acknowledge Full Sail University, a school that took a chance on me and provided me with an excellent education. I understand that college is not the right path for everyone, but knowledge from any source is incredibly valuable. After feeling lost for so long, earning my degree was one of the best decisions I could have made.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone I have met along this journey called life. I have experienced life in group homes, foster care, and as homeless. I hustled, robbed, and gang-banged, all to find out who I am to survive and to find out where I belong. Thankfully, a few people—though not many—never gave up on me. Those I meet now understand my past but choose to see me for who I am today. Thank you!

My relationship with my family is strained, and I take full responsibility for that. However, the kindness of strangers, some of whom have become like family, has brought me immense joy. So once again, thank you to all of you. You know who you are.
